View Full Version : Transfer Deadline Day

What?
25-03-2002, 04:48 AM
With the ominous day approaching, If you were the manager what would you do?

What kind of players and who should we be looking at, loans or permanants, and should anybody be sold??

Wouldn't worry about it - just sack Francis :p

A really lazy striker who scores 25 a season. No. No. Wrong thread. I think we've got the type of players we need but the mix isn't quite working yet.

We should look at buying a "glue" player, who unites his teammates. I think what we need most, ironically, is either a real worker to anchor the midfield or a flair player to open things up with his passing. I think we've got players already who can do this (Aki is the former and Julian the latter) but neither is the glue to hold it together at present.

The player whom I believe can fill this role for us has been suffering from injury and out of the picture right through our dismal run. Come back, Kit.

The lad Byfield from Walsall.
He and O'Conner ran the middle on Saturday,

What?
25-03-2002, 02:23 PM
I was personaly thinking the same, about getting that "glue" midfilder!

We should also complete the permanant signing of Murphy, or extend his loan for the season, but with all sheff utd's susspensions this might be quite difficult!!

25-03-2002, 04:01 PM
I'd like to see us sign Murphy - can you imagine how strong a centre back pairing of him and Popovic would be?
Unfortunately, he would be available on a Bosman at the end of the season so I can't see us paying money for him now
I'd also like to see Paul Merson join us on loan (I'm not sure about a long term commitment) to the end of the season even if that meant losing Hayden.

Outgoing moves I'd like to see on Transfer deadline day:

Hopkin to Brighton - Free (They deserve him)
Rubins to Anywhere that had never seen him but heard that Arsenal wanted him 2 yrs ago for several million quid (Just to raise some dosh)
The moaning bloke who sits behind me in the Whitehorse a job relocation to Glasgow.

That'll do for starters

I would still like to see all the main players fit. At least it would give us, And the manager, a better view of it.

I've heard that Burger King have an opening for a food-taster.

Otherwise Hopkin to anyone that will have him.

Byfield is a striker btw - so no real need for him.

Can't see us signing Murphy - we have him on loan until two games from the end of the season and Symons and Popovic should be fit by then. Sheff Utd wanted 250K for him - that's a bit much for two games as he is on a free at the end of the season. I would imagine that it is all sown up for then if he is going to stay.

This is from BBC Online which has a deadline day section, the latest...

As you can see Wayne Carlisle looks to have fixed himself up at Bristol Rovers. I've got mates who follow them so we'll hear how he gets on from time to time.

I'd really like us to find a decent midfielder, but unless anyone else has heard some news and knows otherwise, it looks like today is going to be a gatehring of freebies and loan deals with barely a penny spent. I imagine we'll see some of our other 'released' names poppoing up during the day.

Willie Falconer (St J'stone to Grimsby) Free
Kevin Gallacher (U/A to Sheff W) Free
Andy Thomson (Bristol Rovers to Wycombe) Free
Wayne Carlisle (C Palace to Bristol Rovers) Free
Jason Jarrett (Bury to Wigan) Undiclosed
Gareth Ainsworth (Wimb'don to Preston) Loan
Darren Dunning (Blackburn to Blackpool) Loan
Phil Clarkson (Blackpool to Bury) Loan
Nathan Lowndes (Livingston to R'ham) Loan
Danny Webber (Man Utd to Watford) Loan
Jon McCarthy (Birmingham to Sheff W) Loan

(U/A represents unattached)

Are you sure you're not getting mixed up with Barras. He scored both their goals that day. I wouldn't suggest buying him.

Byfield played well at Selhurst and gets on the scoresheet regularly, could be good.

I know it wasn't Byfield who scored the goals but he was the player who dominated the game. If I remember correctly both of Walsall's goals that day came from set pieces anyway.

Bristol Rovers have completed the signing of Crystal Palace's Wayne Carlisle on a free transfer.
The midfielder has made just one appearance for the Eagles this season, in the Worthington Cup.

I don't know where you got that impretion from. He looked ok when they played us but he's only scored 6 this season - hardly an inspiring record. There are way better strikers in the nationwide.

I thought Byfield looked good on Saturday too. This has just come up on Football365:

Darren Byfield has returned to Walsall after a proposed move to Rotherham broke down.

The two clubs had agreed a fee for the 25-year-old striker but the deal was called off after the player failed to agree personal terms with the Millers.

Saddlers manager Colin Lee said: "We had agreed a deal with Rotherham for the sale of Darren Byfield.

"However, he went to the club for talks and has failed to sort out personal terms with the club," he told Walsall's official website.

Shouldn't think they will be asking that much for him.

That's a bargain, but he is a centre forward. As Clint is probably on his way soon, I think we could use another as back up to Ade and Doog.

Gray swaps Selhurst for seaside

Youngster Wayne Gray will spend the remainder of the season with Brighton after joining The Seagulls on loan.
The striker has been signed by former Leicester boss Peter Taylor to act as cover for Bobby Zamora, who is currently being troubled by a shoulder problem.
The move is another chance for the 22-year-old to put himself in the shop window before his contract expires in the summer - the switch to the Withdean Stadium is Gray's fourth loan as he has also had successful recent spells with Leyton Orient as well as Swindon and Port Vale.
Gray has made it clear he would like to stay with Wimbledon and force his way into the first team, so he will be looking to use his time at Brighton to prove a point to Terry Burton in the final weeks of the campaign.
