View Full Version : Who's actually going to win?

davidjonesy

My bets on France. They looked deadly against Scotland with an unbelievable attack. They also stopped dougie scoring which means they must have a pretty tight defence!:p

Agreed - if France can play that well & with that much flair in a friendly, then I can see them winning it again. Zidane at his best is a tough act to beat!

I would pick France, but something normally trips up defending champions, so I don't expect them to win it.

Not that I'm suggesting an alternative, mind you... ;)

Daniel_Nash

I'd probably pick France, grudgingly, or maybe Italy to get their act together this time.

Both sides have lots of quality available, i think this world cup might be quite open.

France if not
Argentina, if Bastistuta starts to score
Or Italy

England knocked out first round :grrr:

The french defence once exposed to pace will not stand up to the examination. Desailly and Leboeuf are becoming past their sell-by date and France will concede more than 1998. The only problem for the other teams is that they will score more.

So for me the favourites are Argentina

other teams capable of winning it include Englnad,Italy,France,Brazil (you never know) and Spain.

My dark horses are Sweden

Not so sure on this one, they seem to have a lot of average players and very few top draw. Players like Henrik Larsson may be prolific for Celtic, but he isn't really for Sweden. No Kennet Andersson this time either. Ljungberg has been in good for for Arsenal., but look who he has alongside him.. can you say that he will get the same breaks with Sweden? For a country with a small population they do well though.

But look at Argentina, if France don't win it then i think this lot might. They may be a bit dirty, and will lose to England :D but they might well beat France in the final. Sad thing is too that they have a lot of youngsters coming through to terrorise future World Cups!

Fairly easy first round, will grow as the competition goes on, got one of the best (if not the best) centre-back pairings in the world, Vieri up front, Totti producing some magic, and a good, solid squad.

Republic of Ireland - I seriously believe they are worth an outside bet. They are better than they have ever been, with a good manager, some great players and a fantastic team spirit. They are very difficult to beat and have a fairly easy group to get through.

There are not many other international teams that have played superbly recently either. You just have to be able to put it together when it matters and we have proved on numerous occasions recently that we can do that.

I don't think we will win it though.

It's interesting because for the first time it's not held in Europe or the America's, and winners always come from those regions. On that basis i've put my house on North Korea who will invade on the night of the first South Korea match and take over while everyone is watching telly.

If England get thier act together they have a chance, France are strong but Scotland are nothing (sorry to any aweats out there but it is true).
I think it will be the team that aclimatises the best and easiest.
So China it is then :D

IMHO you can never rule out Germany, Italy, Argentina, Brazil, France or England.
I'm just gonna enjoy it and hope against all hope that England get through the first round, probably to meet France.

Spain ALWAYS underachieve to a crazy extent.. I've given up on them.

IMO the easy favorites are France Italy and Argentina, though I have my doubts about Argentina now. If I were a betting man I'd go for Italy. Plenty of superstar talent in defense, midfield and attack. Always do well at tournaments. Italy it will be.

gotta be France. Player for player they have the quality all over the pitch. True about their centre backs, but I would be VERY surprised to see Lebeouf start there. It is mainly their attacking talent though, Zidane, Henry, Pires, and a pretty solid midfield with Viera.

Still, they won last time by not conceding goals, so with this in mind my second choice would be Italy, who must have the best defence in the tournament (on paper), and a lot of attacking flair too.

One of the finalists in the World Cup will be:

France Argentina England Brazil
or anyone else from groups A,C,F,H - Sweden Nigeria Russia ?

The other will be:

Italy Germany Portugal Spain
or anyone else from groups B,D,E,G - Poland Cameroon Ireland ?

I'll put a large sum on Italy making it to the final at least. :)

With foreign players, Janet. Real Madrid look class but have Carlos, Zidane, & Figo none of whom are Spanish nationals.

Will not be throwing my money away on a country, who in my book do not even deserve their continued seeding in these events, something stinks about that.

We should start a new thread in a couple of weeks making it clear only one country should be selected. People have come on here saying France, Argentina or Italy are going to win it. Well make your mind up.

My predictions:

Brazil will surprise everyone and win it.

Barthez will drop the mother of all clangers to send an otherwise formidable France out in a shock result.

Italy will be dull and will be knocked out late in a game after trying to hold on to 1-0 for nearly all the match.

England will have to drastically rearrange their formation as their plans will be ruined by injuries and suspension. However the new formation will exceed expectations and we'll end up being knocked out on penalties.

Spain will be ****, as usual.

Ireland. Honorable defeat after the group stage.

Korea will last longer than Japan.

Germany will fail to get through the group stage.

On another thread I suggested Russia, which someone took seriously enough to reply to. In all honesty, I see Argentina as the most likely winners, if they adapt to the foreign environment. As with everyone else, I see their main opponents as France and Italy. England, sorry, and Spain seldom have what it takes at this level. Ireland won't feature that long either (sorry Clint) but will give their best and walk out with their heads high.

Yes.

Incidently, if Rep of Ire win their group (E) they will play the runners up from Group B (Spain, Slovenia, Paraguay or South Africa) if Rep of Ire are runners up they play the winner of Group B.

If England win their group (F) they will play the runners up from Group A (France, Sengal, Uraguay or Denmark) if England are runners up they play the winner of Group A.

The two qualifying teams from each group are scheduled to meet in the semi-final. So there won't be an England V Argentina final or an Ireland v Germay final. But hey guess what that means - we'll probably end up with another Germany V Argentina match :veryangry

Anyway, England v Ireland would be cool.

The humidity will suit Argentina and Brazil ... but the rain won't - although as the vast majority of players play in Europe, they shouldn't have too much problem.

Argentina to win it.

Interestingly, someone told me that only one team has ever won the World Cup outside of their continent (I dunno if that was Brazil in '94, or whether 'the Americas' were counted as one continent). So in that case, China to walk it.

What? It doesn't rain in Brazil or Argentina? Have you seen the size of that rain forest?;)

Oh, Brazil are the only team to have won outside of their own continent; in Sweden in 1958 (think it was in 58, they definitely won in Sweden)

Portugal have got to be worth an each way bet, if they win their group they probably only have to beat Croatia and Spain to reach the semis, and after that who knows. Russia will probably get to the 1/4 finals.

It's easy to predict possible shocks already because 2 groups lack a strong team (thanks to the ridiculous seeding of South Korea and Japan, I know they're hosts but come on, one would have been enough, maybe they could have played off for the right to be seeded?), and the draw is bizzarely structured so some finals are technically impossible to occur (e.g. France vs Argentina), this may be because they want to avoid people having to keep moving from one country to another through the tournament or something.

Anyone betting would do well to avoid the odds on France and Argentina who are likely to play each other before the final. Discounting one of them getting knocked out by a surprise team.

Italy is where my money is going at 5/1. England have drifted to 11/1 if anyone fancies a patriotic bet. To keep interest in the tournament I fancy a few group winner bets. Ireland at 9/2, England at 5/2 and perhaps Belguim at 21/10. Also thinking of Montelli at 18/1 and Vieri at 10/1 given how far Italy are expected to proceed. Trezeguet at 8/1 and Henry at 9/1 is certainly hoping that France do not stumble.

Thoughts please?

Ruskin Old Boy
31-05-2002, 12:52 AM
On the betting for the golden boot, it's worth looking at a country that's in a weak group with a proven goal scorer who could fill his boots in one game. Think it was Solenko in 1994 who shared top spot in this way. If Vieri plays in all 3 group games he could be a good bet (Ecuador and Mexico to concede the goals). A long shot would be Patrick Mboma for Cameroon who score freely.

This World Cup looks very open. Sweden and Denmark could well shut the door on both pre tournament favourites. Italy have a tough challenge against Mexico and Germany have to get something out of Cameroon.

Spain look good but always falter and Brazil are going about their business. Portugal are too weak for me, they beat Poland well but Poland are a very weak side.

England have a chance to really establish themselves in this tournament and this is despite weaknesses across the park, in particular midfield. No reason now to fear anyone. Just learn from the Argentine and French arrogance and don't underestimate anyone.

My bets are looking so so. England could well win the group and theres a bit of a chance that Ireland can. On a financial front (not emotional) I need Italy to progress, especially for Vieri's goal scoring exploits.

Republic of Ireland - I seriously believe they are worth an outside bet. They are better than they have ever been, with a good manager, some great players and a fantastic team spirit. They are very difficult to beat and have a fairly easy group to get through.

So far so good. :p

My bets on France. They looked deadly against Scotland with an unbelievable attack. They also stopped dougie scoring which means they must have a pretty tight defence!:p

Oh for the gift of hindsight.

My money is on Italy...Doh!

There's no point in dredging up all the old predictions because everything's been unpredictable so far. You can't blame people for predicting France or Argentina, all the signs were there.

Still got Brazil down to win it. Hope I'm wrong! Got the other 3 semi finalists wrong so that's a good sign!

my first prediction was brazil but considering they only beat turkey 2-1 with turkey finishing the game with 9 men, and against the belgium's they won unconvisingly 2-0 i think that we will win
come on england

Looks like most of us are wrong as the majority of people thought that either France, Argentina, Italy, England or Ireland would win. Nevermind!

3 out of 7, with 1 to play. With maybe some partial points for near misses.
