10/01/2002 Youri Djorkaeff FW Kaiserslautern (Ger,1) Unhappy at not being in the first-team.
04/02/2002 Matteo Sereni GK Ipswich Town (Eng,P) Sereni: "It is a very difficult time for me. It is the first time in five years I have not been the first choice. This is no good for me at my age. Hopefully I will win my place back, but if I have not done so then at the end of the season I will have to look elsewhere."
06/02/2002 John Curtis RB Blackburn Rovers (Eng,P) Curtis: "I'm naturally fed up of not playing at the moment. Being on the sidelines while the team is not winning games is not very enjoyable at all and I suppose those of us not in the side right now have a right to ask the manager if he's prepared to make changes. If I can't get in the team when we're struggling, when will I get a game? At the moment I'm not even sure if I'll travel down to London for the Fulham game and that is a bit depressing."

You want to carry on from the last season. It's been frustrating but I have just got to keep going and try to impress the manager when he is watching and hopefully, get a game."
03/03/2002 Jari Litmanen FW Liverpool (Eng,P) Litmanen: "I came here to play first-team football and that is still what I expect. I understand all about squad rotation but I did not join Liverpool to be on the bench. Of course I am not satisfied with not playing. Will the lack of football affect my future? No comment."
03/03/2002 Jonatan Johansson ST Charlton Athletic (Eng,P) Johansson: "I`m not happy with the fact that I`ve not played much lately. It isn`t easy to motivate yourself for reserve games and, hopefully, I will get a first-team chance soon."
11/03/2002 Quinton Fortune LM Manchester United (Eng,P) Fortune: "Because I don't play regularly, I feel my World Cup place is threatened. I want to go to the World Cup with South Africa so it is important for me to play."

It does raise a few points -

As mentioned before I think this is a bit out of date, e.g Lockwood at Leyton Orient signed a new contract a few weeks ago.

I'm pretty sure that whilst he's not in favour Behalter has a two year contract at Palace and is not available on a free, though is transfer listed.

The most glaring miss in your attacking midfielders is the one player who we probably will be getting on a free this summer which is, Bjarne Goldbaek.

Martin Rowlands from Brentford. I used to watch him when he was at Farnborough Town a few years ago and you could see he the potential to be a class player.

I'll believe that when he steps out in Red n Blue.

Anyway... according to that, we should be able to get in Overmars, Fortune, Effenberg, Junihno and Davids to sort out our midfield.

Then we can get in Roberto Baggio to replace Clinton.

We'd be able to score 200 goals a season with that line up (although I bet TF would drop Baggio to play Ade :) ), albeit we'd still have a rather leaky defence...

If Davids, Overmars and the rest struggle to see the benefits of living near Norwood, I think we should try and get Paul Evans from Brentford who's available on a free (another player not on the list)

Goldbaek, a gem!

Yes, a reasonable first division player, but if we've got any long term ambition, why bother to have him kicking around the reserves on a fat wage?

Why would Goldbaek be in our reserves if we signed him then? Who's going to be keeping out of the right side midfield place? Tommy Black (who started a grand total of 5 league games last season), David Hopkin? Jamie Smith? I think if we signed him, he wouldn't exactly be struggling to make the first team.

We've gotta go for Jerome Elroy, the only problem might be him relocating.

Wayne Routledge?

Performing against players of comparative age and physical development, Wayne has already shown he is up there with the best, as proved by his current displays with the England U17's, but he is still not yet physically mature or experienced enough to take on a REGULAR role as a midfield organiser in the hurly burly of the English First Division.
Such a player, of quality, will have to brought in from elsewhere as a matter of priority. Routledge should continue to be carefully nurtured in the reserves and with the FA Youth Cup squad (much as Giggs was at Old Trafford at a similar age) and given regular opportunities in the first team, initially as a wide midfielder. especially on firm grounds. As he showed in the last home game against Preston, he has excellent one-touch control, good dribbling and ball-holding technique and loves to run at defences. He can also score!

Colin Healy would be an excellent aquisition.

Did well for the Republic, unlucky not to be in Japan and Korea.

Agree totally - referring to the Preston game, did anybody notice the "introduction" Wayne got from Rob Edwards about 30 seconds after coming on? - not dirty, but a good "solid" challenge with just a bump with his hip. Result - Wayne ended up in the advertising boards and Edwards calmly played the ball back. There are much bigger thugs than Edwards around who would take great please in putting a "young upstart" in his place - especially if Wayne makes them look foolish with a nutmeg or two!

We should be nuturing a talent like Routledge can be - not rushing him in too soon. The comparison to the way Utd brought on Giggs is very apt.

Mong!

Perhaps with all the financial itv stuff going around we might not need a creative midfielder?

We have one in Wayne Routledge, perhaps we will start blooding him fully next season?

Having re-read my post, I don't think I've explained myself properly. I have no problem with Goldbaek as a first division player. If we want to progress to the premiership, we need to find someone better (and before you ask, I have no immediate suggestions). Goldbaek, as demonstrated with both Chelsea and now Fulham, is not a Premiership player. I can't give you any stats to back this up, only the word of a couple of Fulham supporting colleagues.

Goldbaek, as demonstrated with both Chelsea and now Fulham, is not a Premiership player. I can't give you any stats to back this up, only the word of a couple of Fulham supporting colleagues.

Goldbaek isn't a "quality" premiership player granted, but he does have plenty of international and top flight experience.

You are also completely forgetting that we are NOT a premiership club and, as Fulham have shown already with Goldbaek, he is a player thats good enough to get you out of the first division which is our first aim isn't it?

Basically, and especially with the financial issues for 1st division clubs for the season ahead, I don't know which "premiership" players you think are going to be attracted to a first division club that doesn't own it's own ground

And then what do we do with him after one season and he has got us up? We need a player with potential who can become a premiership player, not one that we know isn't.

Without getting into a debate as to whether we should sign him or not, what is a definition of a "premiership player"? I would have thought it was someone who played in the premiership.

In which case, Goldbaek is. He played today. In fact, I think he's played in their last few matches. If Tigana (who's no fool) thinks he's good enough to choose him, that makes him a premiership player in my eyes.

With respect....absolute cr@p. Did Manchester City view Stuart Pearce's influence this season as something to stand them in good stead next season? What about Bolton the season before with Dean Holdsworth, Blackburn with Mark Hughes?

Get there first or else you'll be doing a "Goldberg" and buying players for the premiership instead of concentrating on getting out of this division first.

Not much chance for about half our current squad then is there? Do we dump them now or wait a while?

The point has been made - two different jobs - get there, then stay there. Without comment of Goldbaek, which would be better for the club - Have a div 1 player on div 1 wages hanging around while we're in the Premiership or have a Premiership player on Premiership wages while we're still in Div 1? Ask Sheff Wed, ask Bradford - or think back three seasons!

Fantastic point, unfortunately according to SJ Palace already has several players on Premier Wages. SJ has conceded that Popovic, Clarke, Symons, Kirovski and Hopkin (can anyone remember anyone else?) are on Big Bucks

Not sure about Symons... he hadn't signed a contract with Fulham since they were in the 2nd division. And Kirovski is on £0 per week now.
