John Smith

It could be quite a tight game. Senegal are good at defending and are likely to stick men behind the ball and hope to nick one at some point. Of course, an early goal for France would change all this.

Some intersting facts about Senegal courtesy of the beeb

Senegal are unbeaten in their last eight competitive matches

In competitive matches, Senegal have only conceded seven goals in 21 matches since the CAF African Cup of Nations 2000. No team has scored more than one goal against the Senegalese in these games.

Nigeria were the last team to score more than one goal against Senegal in a competitive match when they beat them 2-1 in the CAF African Cup of Nations 2000. The date was 7 February 2000.

Early Predictions are,

When/If France score no-matter what the goal was like the commentators will make a sarky comment about "Naive African defending"

The 7 Senegal fans will outsing the couple of thousand French fans.

The phrase "the've made a lot of friends today" will be heard about Senegal as France go 3-0 up.

The opening ceremony will somehow involve Sumo Wrestlers, Orgami, Sony Walkmans and everyother racial sterotype that the Japanese can unintentionaly ridicule themselves with.

Andy Townsend will critisise players who have won more in a season than he has thoughout his career whilst keeping a straight face.

There will be one fit female French fan who the cameras will focus on at every oportunity.

1-1 draw. And the commentators have latched onto the fact the the African teams are no longer tactically naive. More of the Senegal team play in Le Championnat than the French team, they have an astute manager, and the passions to succeed over their former "occupiers" will carry them through to a creditable draw against a team without Zizou, and with a not fully fit Henry.

And Aliou Cisse will finally be recognised as one of the best defenders in the world - you heard it here first:p

Imagine scoring the world cup winner for your country against a side that untill 1960 you were a colony of. He is going have the pick of any woman in Senegal, won't have to ever buy a drink in Senegal again. What a life innit.

Good news for England is that France are now unlikely to win their group (i expect them still to qualify). As a result a second place in our group would mean we do not have to play them. i would definitely rather play Senegal/Denmark or Uruguay

It shows that this World Cup is going to be tough. I am not so sure Senegal is a good pick for England(if we make the second round).

What a shame that Senegal do not play Ireland, we could have a bet on who would be off-side the most :p :D

AJ, did you enjoy Smyth?

Very few of the teams out there can be considered weak. The outcome will be decided by the team with the best bench.
France proved today that a major part of their team is the wrong side of 30? I expect one of the Africian teams to be in the semi-finals, I will be surprised if England make it out of their group, any other group and they would be a good bet to make it to the quarter-finals.
I expect the Swedes will go after Beckham in the opening 15 mins.

I pick for the world cup is Italy :(

Well that was a nice little suprise to kick start the competiton. I thought france were very poop for there standards and without zidane they had no shap or rythum. senegal were very good but france should still not be losing to a team of senegals standard. And with this result, the argies have now been made favourites by the bookies to win the competition.

It's made my day! I am so happy to see Senegal win, they are such nice people, so friendly despite the poverty and they deserve the success. Imagine the party!!!

Also, France needed a kick up the arse.

I will be off to the pub shortly to raise a jar to the Wor Senegalese :D wor!

Seems they're celebrating in style... :D

And, after the final whistle blew, delirious supporters poured out on to the streets shouting "we're going to eat chicken tonight" - a reference to the French side's cockerel emblem.

They will still win the group IMHO, 6 points will be enough to finish top and I can't see lightning striking twice (I can rapidly see myself eating those words but there you go). A lot will depend on whether Uruguay vs Denmark is a draw or not, and whether Senegal have it in them to get any more points. Despite today's result I'd be happy to play Senegal in round 2.

T'would be horrible if we were to go into our game against Nigeria knowing that France came 2nd in their group, and we had got a result against the Argies, and we needed to finish 2nd to avoid the French! Germany threw a game in 1954 to avoid Brazil :)

Not surprising when they play all four strikers at the same time  Henry, Wiltord, DuGarry, Trezuguet(or whatever) and Cisse.

Goal was another clanger from the Manc Maestro.

I stick to my theory that loads are knackered and carrying injuries after a tough season in the Prem. Now they know why England always underperform !

blatantly we'll end up top of our group, France will come second in their group but hit form after this kick up the arse and will proceed to whoop us on their way to the final where they will lose to Spain

Well, the game I watched just seemed to show that it is very unlikely that any European team is going to win this World Cup.

The conditions are going to be the deciding factor here, an adavantage to some, a huge disadvantage to others.

hot, and humid, with relatively long grass, does not suit the northern hemisphere tactics and style.
The Senegal players, though under some pressure, looked reasonably
comfortable with the conditions. The French did not.

My money is still on Argentina or a lacklustre Brazilian side.

Out of all the european sides, italy would be my tip to cope best with the conditions and win it because they have one of the best defences around and can counter attack at ease. Spain might also be worth an outside bet.

But any other european country - no chance - the French are far too vulnerable to pace at the back and can be kept at by with ease without Zidane and he might not be fully fit for a while after he recovers.

African footballer of the year El Hadgi Diouf has signed for Liverpool, the English premier league club's website said on Saturday.

"We can confirm that El Hadji Diouf has now signed a five-year deal with Liverpool, which is wonderful news for everyone at the club," Ian Cotton, the club's spokesman said.

The 21-year-old Lens striker, who starred in Senegal's shock 1-0 victory over defending champions France on Friday in the World Cup's opening match, was his country's top scorer in the qualifying campaign.

A transfer fee was not disclosed although Lens coach Joel Muller had valued the striker at around 10 million pounds.

"I'm delighted to be joining Liverpool. Liverpool are a club that expects to be one of the best in Europe," Diouf was quoted as saying on Liverpool's website.

"I want to be one of the best players in the world and I'm sure that at Liverpool and with a great coach like Gerard Houllier I can do that."
