View Full Version : Not quite another Wilf thread

This kept me up for an hour or so last night.

Imagine for a moment that Man City or someone equally ridiculous come in and bid £17 mill for Wilf. The chairmen tell Dougie that they want to bank £5m and Doug has got £12m to buy a straight replacement made up of 3 year wages and transfer fee.

Ignore for a minute that some poor misguided players may not want to come to Palace or drop down a league but what 2 names would be on your list to approach.

For me -

Look to sign Drogba on a short term contract! £12m should just about cover his wages until the summer. He'd score about 30 in this league between January and the end of the season!

I was thinking early how much you'd need to splash out on someone like Altidore. He'd be different gear in our league. Will never happen. Don't know how much more glamorous the Dutch league is compared to ours.

Andros Townsend is a good shout.

Adomah is a similar level to Bolaise, we need someone more reliable than that.

From the time I first saw him at Barnet till when I've seen him recently I would say Adomah is a better player than Bolasie. Obviously I hope I'm wrong on this.

I would go for Ince and Austin as well although Adomah might suit our 4-2-3-1 system better than Ince. Ince may also be a bit too expensive for our £12M budget when you may have to pay £3M+ to get Austin.

Matt Phillips would also be a decent alternative to Ince.

Thomas Ince and Charlie Austin would be absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately I don't think Dougie would see enough of the cash because (obviously) CPFC2010 need their cash back.

If we signed those two we'd be nailed on to win the league.

This is a good point. Zaha is only one player, no matter how good. Use the money well and the squad could actually come out stronger. What is really infuriating is when players go JUST to balance the books. I know it can be necessary, I agree it must be done, but it is still infuriating. Balancing the books for a while and improving the squad could almost be worth it.

What if Man City paid £15m for him and said we could keep him on loan until the end of next season? It would mean we could buy two players and keep Wilf.

The right players, and we'ld win this league this season, evven if Man City gave us the money in the next window (January).

Although its a great choice, once Thomas Ince moves from Blackpool, it will only be to a Prem team, a top 10 prem team at that. Adomah is more realistic

You can't lump gabbiadini in with that lot imo, as said in memory lane recently it was tactics at time that failed him n certainly not the other way round.
£17 mill not enough as we'll be in prem by then so £27 mill and deffo get routledge in as he's a decent prem winger.

Firstly I wouldn't sell him until the summer, or maybe the summer after if he fancies a year in the Prem with his favourite club, and then I would build again from the youth ranks.

Put the money aside for a rainy day, or use it to strengthen across the squad, not just go gung-ho to replace one player.

CaterhamEagle
12-10-2012, 10:15 AM
I think despite his love for the club and the club + fans love for him if a big enough offer came in we'd have to let him go - I'd love to keep him until the end of the season though at least. If we can make the prem this season it would make a big difference and we could end up with more money for him. That said if he gets injured and we miss a big deal on the January window that's a huge loss to finances and a big risk given the budget we run on. With the money we could reinvest into some quality talent, and bring in the young lad Johnny as he starts hitting peak.

I'd spend £500k on Alan Lee and £11.5m to clone him 10 times so we could finally live the dream of a team of Alan Lees.
