FROM THE HORSES MOUTH

The local and national press have linked Crystal Palace with a number of players over the summer break, and now Trevor Francis reveals the truth behind the rumours.

One name that has been consistently linked with the Eagles since the end of last season is burly striker Lloyd Owusu of Brentford who is available on a free transfer.

I have held talks with Lloyd Owusu over the summer, said Francis. But because hes available for nothing there are a number of clubs interested in him and he has spoken to many of them.

Since talking with him Ive been informed that hes made a decision to go to Sheffield Wednesday.

Another name linked with a move to Selhurst Park is Welsh midfielder Carl Robinson another player available for free.

Trevor continues: Im aware that Carl Robinson is available and that hes been released by Wolves. He is a player that Ive considered over the summer, but hes not one thats on my list at the moment.

Francis added that he had not been in discussions with any other players that had been linked with moves to the club, including Ijah Anderson and Neal Ardley. However, one player that he is keen to bring in permanently is French goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso, who featured on loan last season.

We were hoping that Cedric would come back and resume training with the rest of the squad on Monday, but I understand Marseille have appointed a new first-team coach and hes quite keen to keep Cedric there.

I believe theyve offered him a new contract but were still in negotiations with him and were still exploring the possibility of bringing him back to Crystal Palace, so well have to wait and see if that goes anywhere.

Trevor was also pleased to announce that he had brought somebody into the club since last season. Jim Barron has been appointed as the new fitness coach in place of John Briley.

Jim is joining us full-time, which is something I requested added Trevor. I have great admiration for John, I liked his work but it was never possible for him to work here full-time, so Ive taken on Jim Barron who I know from my Birmingham days.

Im happy with the work he does on the training field and Im sure hell be a good addition to the coaching staff here.

Carasso played last season therefore there obviously is a need for 3 goalkeepers.

So keep your rolly eyes to yourself.

If the right player at the right price becomes availabe - do we pass him up because we have other needs?

Buying Carasso wont affect other transfers.

By the way I think the Defence isnt our problem.

All the teams had 5 strikers, we only have two, whether or not the third one is fit.

Not if you include the reserves like Kabba and Williams - and yes, we should include them because Carasso will mainly be the reserve keeper, offering emergency cover, just like the reserve strikers.

Austin, Berthaler, Murphy, Mullins, Popovic, Symons, Granville, Fleming, Smith, Harrison, Frampton, Edwards all played last season so obviously there is a need for 12 defenders and so all the remaining defenders here should be given extended contracts, and we should be looking for replacements for Murphy and Edwards AS A PRIORITY!

I'm not against Carasso coming here. I doubt he'll get a game unless we have 2 goalkeepers injured which is quite rare and is unlikely to happen 2 yrs in a row, but the point is we need a central midfielder AS A PRIORITY!

Instead, we're desperately trying to sign a 3rd choice goalkeeper and an average-at-best striker!!

what about Cronin then?! We have 3 keepers already here who are all of high quality! Do we need a fourth?!

Exactly. Francis' comments suggest he's not focused on acquiring what we really need. No sense of strategic thinking and focus or vision of what the team needs to be promoted. Unfortunately, it doesn't make you feel very optimistic about next year's prospects under Francis, does it?

Some of you lot really are muppets.

Signing players isnt like Championship Manager.

You dont just click "buy player" on your computer screen.

Sometimes players arent available to you.

I shall reiterate. Carasso signing does not affect the future purchases of other players.

I think Murphy and Edwards and some other's have been replaced. 5 new professional contracts were given to ex-Youth players:p

Is that "Jim Barron" as in ex-Arsenal and Palace goalkeeper? He of blond curly locks.

Cronin is still only 16 and will be 17 in September when he turns professional, and has so far had no experience of first team football.
It is absolutely essential that we, like any other ambitious club, have sufficient experienced goalkeeping cover, and Carasso would fit the bill very nicely. Cronin is highly talented, but needs more games at reserve level to learn and master his trade, before entering the first team squad. If he works hard at his game he could well come into the reckoning sooner rather than later.
Goalkeepers, because of the nature of the work they put in at training, as well as in match competition, are often more vulnerable to injury than outfield players. Outfield players frequently switch positions to replace injured/suspended outfield players, but just imagine the howls of derision from the usual suspects on BBS if our manager was forced to play a full back, midfielder or forward in GOAL in a League game! Francis is doing what any prudent manager would do, he is trying to prepare for most eventualities - what a terrible crime!

No, not if the picture shown on one of the sites is anything to go by.

Difficult, as the keeper you mention went by the name of Paul Barron!!

Surely one of Kolinko or Clarke is going to be shipped out soon? I would have thought that that is what the signing of Carasso implies anyway.

Murphy and Edwards were the cover for Symons and Popovic, so the return fo those two means we have "replaced" these. Granville has come in to cover the injured Harrison, when Harrison is fit again then a question will be asked if he or Frampton is the number two left back and one can be on their way.

On another post - necessary or not, last season we had Clarke, Kolinko and Carasso, plus Cronin. What is the difference this year? you don't need two injured keepers to require three all the time one is on the bench. When Alan Smith continually did not have a sub keeper there was much wailing and knashing of teeth, Francis is just making sure he is well covered in the most specialised position on the pitch, and for a "nominal fee".

Is no one very concerned that a potentially good striker prefers to move north to no hopers like Sheff Wed, rather than join us.
Couldn't have anything to do with our manager's charisma could it ?

Dobbo - he would surely have been far more impressed with their facilities than ours; they probably offered him more money; he will probably be an immediate starter in their team whereas he would presumably have been told that he would be a cover player for us (unless we're selling Morrison and Freedman).

Beanie

The reason that Owusu gave was his prospects of first team football - he said that Wednesdaay offered him a better chance than Palace or Millwall. A local report pointed out that Palace have Morrison, Freedman & Akinbiyi, Millwall, who were also interested have Harris, Sadlier and Claridge - Wednesday have Kuqi and an onl oan striker from Chelsea.

If this is the real reason Owusu would seem to be a bit short on confidence in his own ability.

Interpreting those comments would suggest to me that we're keeping Clinton then, which is great news.
P.S. Today's Mail & Indepenent says Bolton want Chris Armstrong

I'm baffled as to why you'd think that the case Gooders ?

It's common sense to have three 'keepers as cover these days - and he was with us all last season without any sinister reason.
