Greek youngster on trial

Crystal Palace manager Trevor Francis has handed a short trial to Greek youngster Georgios Vakouftsis.
The 22 year-old is hoping to win a permanent move to Selhurst Park if he impresses.
Vakouftsis started his career with Panathinaikos before moving to Fiorentina with whom he made seven appearances. He then left La Viola at the start of last season to join leading Greek side Aris Salonika when the Italians hit cash trouble.
He was the first ever Greek player to play for Fiorentina and has played for the Greek Under-21 side.
Vakouftsis is rated among the best young players to be playing in Greece at the moment and could be ideal to add some much needed depth to The Eagles squad now that Dele Adebola has left the club.

Position : Forward

Date of birth : 30 January, 1980

Team : Fiorentina (Italy)

Nationality : Greece

Notes : The first Greek player ever to play for Fiorentina. Was not seen as very good at his old club Panathinaikos but has improved since the move. One of the best players in the Greek U/21 side.

Height of 1.89. Is that about 6 foot 4 or something. Bit of a target man probably.

Apparently Wombles and Celtic were after him in October last year.

Kinda links in with what a certain Viola supporting friend of mine just told me. Says that Vakouftsis was a "long haired poser who fell over a lot then cried like a leetle boy". Apparently he was incredibly arrogant at Fiore but just as he looked to be getting as good as he claimed he was, he suffered a nasty thigh pull, which has re-occurred on more than one occasion. Fiorentina off loaded him to get rid of his wages (to Iraklis) where he started 4 games, came on as a sub in 7 & scored once. His thigh has flared up again (along with his attitude? who knows) & despite all the promise he has shown, Iraklis have not renewed his contract. That much said, he was top Greek U-21 scorer with 5 goals in EuroChamps qualifying - missed the finals due to a "thigh strain".

For anybody who does want to look it up - played and scored for the Reserves against Banstead. Not sure what that proves though won 5-0, Williams got three and one from Og.

Could be the type of player we need, but wage demands would be high!

Oui! The Marseilles coach appears to think they can use him. Not a bad 'keeper, and one of the best goalkeeping distributors of the ball Palace have ever had.
