If that ground had a running track on it, it would be mistaken for the Withdean stadium.

Also how the heck can they fit 17,800 Germans in that ground?

Well Mat, the ground "Lohmühle" actually is not in a field (training pitches on a former rubbish dump). It's very close to the city center. There's a full licensed restaurant in the new stand and a rather sombre looking pub in the old wooden stand (fancied by the tradional working class fans).
By the way: Beer is being served troughout the match directly to your seat.

As for drinking London SE25 and Selhurst have set some standard, Mat. But I do honestly hope you won't fall into one of those notorious dark watering holes around there on each and every corner of that particular old quarters of Lübeck.

Which league ruedi? Fortuna Duesseldorf used to be in the 2. Bundesliga a few years back I seem to remember?

ruediger
17-07-2000, 12:45 AM
Fortuna Düsseldorf were in the 1. Bundesliga not so long ago. RW Essen, Tennis Borussia Berlin and Wattendscheid 09, KFC Uerdingen and Eintracht Braunschweig had spells in the top-flight too.

VfB Lübeck are playing in REGIONALLIGA NORD - that in fact is 3. Division North. Our best spell was 95-97 in the 2. Bundesliga (average gate 10.000).

League structue is as follows:
1. Bundesliga
2. Bundesliga
covering the whole of Germany

Regionalliga Nord and Regionalliga Süd are third level covering the northern and southern regions of the republic respectively. These leagues are newly formed. We had 5 regional leagues at third level reduced to 2 now.

4th level is Oberliga (Amateur Premier) of which we do have seven or eight.

VfB Lübeck's home record:

99/00: Pld 17, W 14, D 1, L 2, average gate: 4.112

98/99: Pld 17, W 16, D -, L 1, average gate: 4.941

Thanks R, that explains my confusion as to the German league structure.

Do you know perchance where the Stuttgarter Kickers are kicking around right now? Presumably in the Regionalliga Sued or even lower? Back in '92 they had just been relegated as VfB Stuttgart became champions.

ruediger
17-07-2000, 11:39 PM
Stuttgarter Kickers still play in 2. Bundesliga - but only just.

They were relegated at the end of last season (when FC St. Pauli scored in injury-time). But as Tennis Borussia Berlin was demoted because of financial irregularities Kickers were reinstated.

I used to go to the Blues regularly (from 81 - 84) when I was living in the area.
Nice little stadium up there in Degerloch.

I used to go to Stuttgart-Degerloch too, indeed a nice place - and the fans were a lot more forgiving of the team than the VfB fans over at Gottlieb-Daimler.

Saying that though VfB will always be my German team, some great memories there. Finally this season the VfB did one over on the hated Bayern, first time in nearly 10 years.

Funny how BM is the ManUre of Germany - so-called 'fans' all over the bleeding country with zip all connection to Munich.

Vielen Dank, Sport 1 sieht gut aus.

How much for that season ticket at Luebeck? 200 quid for the Holmesdale is still great value for money.

Have you ever sung Ha Ha HaSV to the Hamburgers?

ruediger
19-07-2000, 12:19 AM
VfB Lübeck stadium "Lohmühle" has a capacity of 17.800 of which 5.700 are seats.

season ticket 2000/1
seats: 150 UKP
standing: 68 UKP.

Hamburger SV are 2 division higher so they only come here for friendlies (every 2 or three years) which are pretty boring.

We do have fierce rivalry with Hamburgs other team FC St. Pauli (2. Bundesliga)and Eintracht Braunschweig who are keen on causing a riot. Supporters of clubs from the former East Germany are also highly emotional on their travels.

Season 98/99, penultemate match, top of the table clash
VfB Lübeck (2.) against arch-rivals VfL Osnabrück (1.)
packed house: 17.500.
Osnabrück keeper getting some Miller-style abuse throughout the match

For several years, I got hold of the "Kicker" season previews plus some of their excellent 25 and 30 year Bundesliga reviews. Do you chase after these? Any other Kicker (or similar) titles you can recommend?

Yes, I think so.
VfB are in with a chance to go up just because of hard work and discipline rather than technical skill. They battle for each other. Great team spirit and lots of respect for the 45-year-old manager (by players and supporter). http://www.cpfc.org/ubb/wink.gif

I always had a soft spot for Fortuna Dusseldorf since my fave Yugoslav striker Darko Pancev had a spell there - ironically in their last Bundesliga 1 season. The name is a turn on too, in a very cynical German way.

Hate Bayern in a Man U kind of way; Hollywood FC always washing their dirty linen in public (Matthaus and Klinsmann etc).

I notice too that you mention Krefeld's finest KFC Uerdingen. I remember having the old Palace subbuteo team, and they shared their red and blue stripes with KFC (then Bayer). Do they still wear the famous red and blue?

Bar Wattenscheid, the others look like East German teams. Is this true?

Are Lubeck Western or Eastern Germany?

BTW - Thanx for the info on Colin Bell Ruedi! Looks like my info on him was misplaced.

ruediger
01-11-2000, 11:02 AM
Yes, KFC Uerdingen are still playing in red-n-blue. Unlike England many teams do over here in Germany.

VfB Lübeck are nicely placed in the former West Germany, some 60 kilometres away from Hamburg. Lübeck (215.000) is the biggest port on the Baltic Sea. And it was actually here in the North where the most northern part of the German wall was erected. (I used to live just down the road).

For Lübeck information have a look at:
http://www.deutschland-tourismus.de/e/dest_cities_luebeck_e.html

There are ony 5 teams in the Division based in former East Germany:

Union Berlin
SV Babelsberg 03
Erzgebirge Aue
Dresdner SC
Sachsen Leipzig.

Teams in Northern Germany:
VfB Lübeck
Eintr. Braunschweig
SV Wilhelmshaven
Werder Bremen (A)
Lüneburger SK

Teams in Western Germany
(Northrhine-Westfalia)
Preußen Münster
Fortuna Köln
KFC Uerdingen
Rot-Weiß Essen
SC Verl
Wattenscheid 09
Bor. Dortmund (A)
Fortuna Düsseldorf

Teams in Berlin Area
Union Berlin
SVbabelsberg 03
Tennis-Borussia Berlin

Daum provided Medical Institutes with a hair sample - without any need at all.

Hair samples give evidence for drugs use dating back to a year.
His sample indidcates that he's been on drugs on a regularly basis. What a waste of talent.

BTW: VfB Lübeck missed out reaching the last 16 in the German Cup losing on penalties at home to 2. Division MSV Duisburg.

VfB Lübeck's manager Uwe Erkenbrecher (45)who had six months of his 3-year contract left to run saw fit to ask for an early (and totaly unexpected) exit. And off he went to 2. Bundesliga SpVgg Greuther Fürth (in Southern Germany) the next day.

Former player Dirk Bremser (35) will coach the team right to the winter break.

Top of the league but stumbled into a crisis. That's what football's got in store.

Gloomy days in Lübeck.

Perhaps thats why Herr Chairman Ron has resigned, he wants to be manager of a decent team like Lubeck?
That would really make your day, eh Ruediger

Hi Rude,

What happened to Dinamo Dresden, I see that Dresden SC are in your league - are these the same teams effectively following the unification?

Dynamo Dresden have gone down the drain after reunification. They had a short spell in the 1. Bundesliga, went down and later were further demoted because of financial irregularities.

Dynamo Dresden are now playing in Oberliga (4. level) in front of bigger gates than Dresdner SC (3. Bundesliga Nord) who have a long tradition themselves being champions an cup winners in the 40s.

Vern, Dresden is well worth a visit. Have a look at (in english)

http://www.dresden.de/rooteng/home/home.html

Dynamo and Dresdner SC are playing in the same stadium (DSC ground Hans-Steyer-Stadion regarded as unsafe and therefore closed).

Dynamo stadium is a vast unimpressive oval http://www.dynamo-dresden.de/verein/bilder/stadion.jpg

VfB Lübeck are still top but currently in a deep (self-inflicted) crisis. Last week the manager asked for his resignation (with 6 months on his contract left) in order to take a position with 2. Bundesliga SpVgg Greuther Fürth.

Now young VfB starkeeper Schäfer has signed for 1.FC Nürnberg (2000/1) who'll be in 1. Bundesliga shortly.

Furthermore: 16 player contracts are due to expire at the end of the season. Should VfB go up into full-professional 2. Bundesliga all contracts will be void and have to be re-negotiated. Players are reluctant to
discuss terms until a new manager is found.

Knowing VfB Lübeck's officials that will take time ....

New Manager next season will be Dieter Hecking

Ironically our Steve C on the BBS used to drive the SC Verl club bus.
He lives just around the corner of the tiny village my wife originally hails from - that's some 350 km away from Lübeck.

VfB Lübeck's rescheduled match away to Wattenscheid was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Sh*t, because VfB will have to start "cold" when table-topping Braunschweig (Brunswick) come to Lohmühle next Saturday. Oh how a hate this 7-week winter break.

Brunswick are founder-members of the Bundesliga. They've won the title in the 60s and 70s and are still a big club from the provinces of Lower Saxony. Huge catchment area, great support but still lingering in the 3.Bundesliga North.

They deserve to be at least in the 2. Bundesliga but because of their notorious following they are regarded as VfB enemy No.1 in recent years.

The best gate of the season is expected (10.000+) of which 1.500 to 2.000 will be Brunswick who will take some 300 hooligans with them.
Riot police, dogs and specific video-patrol cars in attendance.

It's going to be quite a game. Top against second (VfB with a game in hand)

Can we have flares at Selhurst Park too? We could always start chucking them at the away fans if we lose!

What a great result. 3 goals in 5 minutes midway through the first half and Leipzig were dead and buried. This win take my home town club back to the top of Regionalliga Nord

Away support from the former East Germany once again were causing severe problems. Some 350 Sachsen Leipzig fans fought battles with stewards and 150 police for almost 60 minutes of the match.
Disgusting.
Police officers even had to call for extra supporting staff.

The quality of play in Regionalliga is probabbly English 2. Division.

German League structure is as follows:

1. Bundesliga
2. Bundesliga (English 1. Division)
are both covering the whole of the nation.
Below at 3. level (covering only the North or South of the republic):
Regionalliga Nord (Regional League North) Regionalliga Süd (Regional League South)

1. and 2. Bundesliga are fully professional while Regionalliga is run as a semi-pro league. Nevertheless many clubs like VfB Lübeck employ full-time pros.

VfB have 22 pros under contract and 3 players have part-time jobs.

Regional leagues have always confused me a bit.

What if none on the clubs at the bottom of Budesliga 2 came from the North?

Does that mean that no team can go up from your division Rudi?

ruediger
27-03-2001, 07:34 PM
Top two clubs from Regionalliga Nord AND top two clubs from Regionaliga Süd will definetely go up.

What about the bottom four in 2. Bundesliga?
That remains to be seen (as the league structure below is new)

Stuttgarter Kickers and SSV Ulm are from the South (no doubt), VfL Osnabrück is from the North, while Chemnitzer FC could go either way but will have to go into Regionalliga Nord if it remains as it is at the moment.

Could be a bit tough playing against Fortuna in a relegation struggle

ruediger

Fortuna Düsseldorf away is a tough fixture. Remember they once played in the 1979 European Cup Winners Cup Final against Barcelona (losing 4:3 aet). Fortuna are now in danger of being relegated to local amateur football (4. level) Oberliga Nordrhein.

To make it even more difficult for VfB Lübeck: it's the first game in charge for new manager Dieter Hecking (3. manager this season).

Anything less than 3 points for VfB will mean curtains.

Kick-off: 7.30 pm on Friday.

Two late goals secured a point at lowly Wattenscheid. That's not enough to put pressure on the leading clubs. But some improvement after four defeats in a row.

The home team tortured by the crowd after a poor run of form (ending all hope of going up).

I've never experienced anything like it in 38 years of going there.

- each players name greeted with a shout of a**hole

- when coming onto the field the team was booed and jeered.

- after kick-off ABOLUTE silence (spooky)

- away team was cheered on

- bad passes or shots were cheered ironically

- three goals were "acclaimed" with friendly hand-clapping.

Can't believe it. Behaviour was such a shame. After all VfB won 3-2 in front of their lowest crowd of the season.

Ironically VfB supporters and officials have COMPLETELY given up hope - some 4 weeks ago. A handful of players have been released since then, 4 others will make their fortunes elsewhere (at higher level). The new manager has begun to give reserve-team players a run-out ...

Crowds are dramatically on a decline so much is the disappointment of "throwing away" promotion.

It looks as if I'm the only one left here to believe there's something still to play for. Being a Palace supporter for nearly 30 years I know why.

Fixtures are as follows:
away at SC Verl next Saturday,
home to KFC Uerdingen on Sunday, May 27
then a week off.
Final match is at relegated Lüneburger SK (70 km away, the nearest opponents anyway) on Saturday June 9.

I'll keep my fingers crossed: an VfB away win at Verl while Babelsberg and Fortuna Köln play each other .......

Selhurst's on an old rubbish dump site too - it seems to affect our playing style, and in fact we could probably argue that it's still a dump :-)

Originally posted by ruediger:
Well Mat, the ground "Lohmühle" actually is not in a field (training pitches on a former rubbish dump). It's very close to the city center. There's a full licensed restaurant in the new stand and a rather sombre looking pub in the old wooden stand (fancied by the tradional working class fans).
By the way: Beer is being served troughout the match directly to your seat.

As for drinking London SE25 and Selhurst have set some standard, Mat. But I do honestly hope you won't fall into one of those notorious dark watering holes around there on each and every corner of that particular old quarters of Lübeck.

So that's it. My home town club VfB Lübeck finishing a place below the promoted teams - for the third year running.
Had they shown a bit more passion and and fighting spirits - just like PALACE - they would have gone up easily. What a let down. :(
On the other hand: there's only one CRYSTAL PALACE FC. :)

That is BV Borussia Dortmund "Amateurs".
The clubs second string containing semi-pro contract players (we don't have reserve teams over here) and under 21s.

Kicker Bundesliga 2003/4 special (I've have a collection dating back to first edition in the 60s) will be on sale in mid-July.
