In an audacious swoop, Crystal Palace have signed defender Gary Bennett. The 42 year old, who retired from football 3 years ago, was a permanent transfer target for Palace during the mid 90’s. Finally it seems, the eagles have got their man. Gary said “ for years I rejected their moves, but when Ian Dowie stated on MOTD he needed a quality free transfer, I rang him. As soon as I told him I was playing centre midfield for my local sunday team, he asked me if I had an agent and when I said no, he said he wanted to sign me. I was actually on trial with Brighton in the summer, played a couple of games and even went on their annual bender...Derek I think his name was”. Bennett will line up with other new signing Angel (the blender) Fernandez, who was signed for 2 goats and a 1 kilo bag of wheat from Ecuador”.

Finally the ball winning midfielder we have been crying out for. Can't beat an experienced head in the centre of the park.

I'm thinking of the Sunderland centre half - I believe you're thinking of the lower league forward who played for the likes of Chester :)

I'll get my anorack.

Gary Bennett was a good player in the lower leagues in his time.

I think he might be a bit old for us now though :)

So Coppell was after both? Along with audacious bids for Dave, Lenny, Tony and Hywel...

He was definitely a midfielder. I remember mistakenly thinking in my youth what a great signing he would be for us.

He's got top flight experience. We're so desperate, we'll take him.

I thought he was a defender. Played for Sunderland.

Still we managed to get Lee 'Big Ears' Sinnott eventually :)

The defender was a big black outhouse if I recall. :) Whereas the striker (a white bloke) scored them by the bucketload for such as Wrexham.

I think we were linked with both. Only Brian Deane and Dion Dublin come anywhere near close...

Don't forget John Dreyer. The ex-Luton defender was continually linked with us in 1990-92.

Gary Bennett. Cardiff/Sunderland was better known as a centre back
