Exactly. This move is appalling. If Granville + Kolkka get injured and we've failed to sign a left-sided player for cover, despite having 8 centre-backs in the squad (5 of which have been signed by Dowie), then the management should get the sack. Let's hope that doesn't happen.

Do we drop Popovic then, and play Hall out of position, simpy because we couldn't be bothered to sign a central midfielder? Whilst at the same time, Granville + Kolkka are shown to be exposed + out of their depth in the Premiership time after time?

No-one's disputing that these 2 players coming in are decent. I'm a big fan of Ventola for example. But are they really what we need?

I think Dowie is going to play Hall in midfield all season. He must be pretty confident in his ability to adapt to midfield to let him learn the position at this high level.

Yes if we have a better replacement for Popovic, I dont particularly like Hall in midfield but ID seems to want him to stay there. If Dowie could find a top quality midfielder i sure he will sign I agree we need one, maybe he will tonight who knows? But I will take quality players from top European teams in whatever positions because we badly need them in our team.

from my Italian mate, "Sorondo is a little bit crazy, good for tackles, comes from argentina. Ventola is a smart and speedy young player, good for headers in penalty area. he was playing in Bari 4-5 years ago as one of most interesting young forward, unforunately he was injuried sometime and now he's coming back doing well. He will not play Inter because Adriano, Vieri, Cruz, Recoba and Martins comes before him in Mancinis thoughts. He was to come to Lazio when Mancini went off but he did not accept as we have no money to spend!!!!

Sounds good to me !!!!

I hate to pee on the chips but it's a well known fact that Italians (in general) don't travel well. Zola and Ravanelli (for a spell) are exceptions to prove the rule.

So it'll be interesting this season to see how Ventola does with us as well as Corradi and Fiore (?) at Valencia.

Glad to hear it if true, but what about the midfield.

daz_eagle
31-08-2004, 06:36 PM
i know we need another midfielder, but i don't think it's a complete nightmare if we don't get one in. cover for left wing would be very nice, but aki and hughes are good players in the middle, hall seems competent enough there (although i agree he looks like a better centre-half) and shaun derry's decent cover.

sorondo and ventola, like the sound of that, we're a right old cosmopolitan bunch these days.

Di Matteo (okay, Swiss born Italian) and Di Canio have played well for their Premiership clubs. Festa and Pistone have been good professionals and stayed in the UK long term. Cudicini has been a good keeper. Amourso at Blackburn settled well in the UK. Not all Italian imports have been Silenziesque.

Palace sign Ventola and Sorondo on loan from Inter Milan
Tue 31 August, 2004 20:22

MILAN, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Inter Milan have loaned Italian striker Nicola Ventola and Uruguayan defender Gonzalo Sorondo to English Premier league club Crystal Palace.

The pair join promoted Palace on season-long loan deals, an Inter spokesman said.

Former Italy Under-21 striker Ventola was on loan at Siena last season and had little chance of making the first team back at Inter with Christian Vieri and Brazilian Adriano ahead of him.

The 26-year-old has previously spent seasons on loan with Bologna and Atalanta.

Central defender Sorondo was loaned to Belgian club Standard Liege last season after struggling to break into the side at Inter following his move from Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting in 2002.

Sounds hopeful I think. However I have no clue about Sorondo as a player and Ventola was very good a few years back.

I'll reserve my opinion until/ if they sign and until I've seen them play.

Also on Sky's web site now

Crystal Palace have beaten the transfer deadline to pull off a major transfer coup after landing Nicola Ventola and Gonzalo Sorondo from Internazionale.

The Eagles have been looking to bolster their squad in the last few weeks and opened talks with Inter earlier this month.

Palace's initial interest was in Sorondo and his fellow South American Kily Gonzalez.

The Argentine rejected the move, but manager Iain Dowie then switched his attentions to Nicola Ventola - as reported on skysports.com.

Both forward Ventola and defender Sorondo have now agreed season-long loan deals at Selhurst Park.

Inter have also confirmed the departures of Sabri Lamouchi (to Genoa) and Ianis Zicu (to Parma).

The Italian giants have also handed a new contract to defender Carlos Alberto Gamarra, after they failed to land Cesar from Lazio.

That line of argument was going very well until you brought Amoruso into it.

He was very highly regarded in Italy, their next best thing in terms of strikers. But it all went wrong, he struggled to get in the first team at Juventus and after that I'm not sure what happened to him. But Inter seems to be a big failing ground for young strikers. Robbie Keane went there and did really well and was loved by the Inter fans but was sold on. Same thing seems to have happened to Ventola. The amount of talent that Inter waste is extraordinary.

Depends on your point of view. What he has done has given loyal service to one club, learnt the language and generally shown a good attitude. Whether you think he is just a carthorse who gave loyal service to one club, learnt the language and generally shown a good attitude is another matter.

Young and talented forward with continous movement, speed and power are the strengths of his style of playing. Palace borrow Inter pair

Wahey! (though Butts'll be back by then) Sorondo joining, unless he's used at fullback does seem to imply we'll be loaning out/selling Powell and/or loaning out Mikele, doesn't it? Unless ID just wants to make sure we're super-covered at the back in comparison to everywhere else.

I fear there will be no more signings. I suspect that the Dowies + SJ have had thier hands full negotiating with Inter to get these two "over the line" (that again). Anyway, glad we will get to these these two in Palace shirts.

Just stop and think for a moment. We have yet to really see what Torghelle and Kaviedes can do once they are up to speed and we have these two inter squad players to add to that. Much more quality potentially. Hoping against hope that a midfield meastro appears as the 11th hour approaches.

Still think we will survive whatever happens.

Got this off the web....

Ventola is a powerful striker, who is pretty good in the air. He is also a reliable goalscorer. But his problem is that he is somewhat injury prone. And he also usually needs a season to settle in, before he becomes a 20+ goals per season striker. He also assists alot of goals, because of his ability to head the ball to players that are making a run towards the oppositions box.

Sounds like the perfect partner for AJ. This signing also puts huge pressure on Shipps, as he is now 3rd target man striker behind behind Ventola & Torghelle. These three will be fighting it out for one place, and unless AJ gets injured, maybe two places.

Nice little article from the Sporting Life....Cant argue with last paragraph

EAGLES DARE TO CHANCE INTER DUO
Crystal Palace manager Iain Dowie completed two loan signings before the closure of the transfer window on August 31.

Italian striker Nicola Ventola and Uruguayan defender Gonzalo Sorondo have joined the Eagles on season-long loan deals from Inter Milan.

Former Italy Under-21 international Ventola spent last season on loan at Siena after failing to make an impact amidst the Nerazzurri's embarrassment of attacking riches.

Meanwhile centre-back Sorondo was farmed out to Belgian Juniper League club Standard Liege.

Dowie had indicated a desire to supplement his squad with players of quality and Ventola in particular was once held in the highest regard.

The challenge for the Selhurst Park boss now is to mould a mixture of Football League and continental journeymen into a team capable of avoiding an immediate relegation.

As for the others we would get no more than £100k for any of them apart from maybe Powell

To be honest, I am really delighted with Ventola, I signed him on Champ! And on PES come to think of it. That MUST be a sure fire sign he is going to be a hit.

Excellent news.

How wonderful to see our Club signing 2 players from Inter Milan.............heady days indeed for the Club.

If Dowie rates them thats good enough for me.

Exciting times for us all. Bring on Pompey !

Me, too. I back his judgement on Andrews, too. He's worked with him before. Knows what he can do. Look at how good Hall is.

Palace net Inter pair

Crystal Palace manager Iain Dowie managed to complete two loan signings before the closure of the transfer window.

Inter Milan striker Nicola Ventola and defender Gonzalo Sorondo have joined the Eagles on season-long loan deals.

Former Italy Under-21 international Ventola spent last season on loan at Siena striker Ventola was on loan at Siena, but has struggled to dislodge Christian Vieri and Adriano in the Inter side.

Uruguayan centre-back Sorondo was farmed out to Belgian club Standard Liege last season.

think the Sky squad list sums up our problems.....though there are a few errors.

4 goalkeepers (excluding Vaesen)
11 defenders
8 midfielders (only 1 of which classed as attacking, though I'd have thought Routledge was fairly attacking)
9 strikers (though Kollka is surely a midfielder).

as we've all said we look lightweight in midfield, so transfer deadline day we sign 2 more strikers and another centre back !!

I just can't believe we've signed another CB. This is doubly bad news as it must surely mean that Hall will continue in midfield, presumably at the expense of Hughes (as we will I suppose play 442 when Torghelle is back). I think Hall would make a great CB, but is not a midfielder, and if Hughes does not play regularly he just doesn't get going. So all in all I am not terribly happy.
The striker is good news, as we need cover and Kaviedes looks very lightweight.
Pity no midfielder though.

Betting scandal hits calcio - updated
Tuesday 11 May, 2004

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Twelve Italian clubs are to be probed by anti-Mafia police into alleged links between gambling and organised crime.

News of the investigation broke this morning when a Naples based anti-Mafia unit visited the headquarters of Siena.

The Tuscan outfit insisted that they were victims in the whole affair, while revealing that another 11 Italian clubs were connected in the investigation.

"We are very calm about the situation," stated director general Walter Scapigliati. "That is because we are the victims in this case."

The club also issued a statement which helped to fully outline what had actually occurred today.

"Police have opened an investigation regarding gambling and organised crime, one which may involve a number of players," it read. "Twelve clubs are involved on a national scale."

The identity of the other clubs have since been revealed, with three other Serie A sides being mentioned.

They are Chievo, Lecce and Reggina. The Serie B and C outfits named are Piacenza, Ascoli, Lumezzane, Sassari, Taranto, Catanzaro, Crotone and Fermana.

Unconfirmed reports allege that some of this season’s games could have been affected, with the aid of some players, after a string of suspicious internet bets.

It was alleged that as many as 20 players could be involved and five have already been named as part of the investigation.

It’s been reported that Siena’s Roberto D'Aversa, Generoso Rossi ?who has now left the club - and Nicola Ventola are helping police with their enquiries.

Grosseto player Salvatore Ambrosino and former Juve Stabia player Vincenzo Onorato are doing the same.

Eight other people are also aiding the authorities. No charges have been made against any clubs or individuals and the investigation continues.

Lecce President Quirico Semeraro said: "The police arrived and asked for documents which we have given them. We have nothing to do with this."

Reggina chief Lillo Foti added: "They can do all the checks that they want. We are as calm as Siena are

Pleased with the Ventola deal, it gives us another option up front which the Torghelle injury has shown we desperately need.

However, you have to ask why, at a time when we have a central defender playing in midfield, we haven't brought in the central midfielder that we so obviously need and instead have opted for another central defender. This now means that we have to plough on with Hall in midfield rather than being able to move him back into defence.
