Apparently we've been in touch with Rangers about a possible move for him in January, along with 2 more Prem clubs & one Championship one. Gers aren't going to play him again (due to an extra 500,000 appearence fee) & are looking to offload him. Rumours are we "can't afford" the (although I suspect "won't pay an extortionate" would be nearer the truth) fee & are asking about a loan deal. Good move?

Lets see they have a player who if they play they will have to pay 500k, so therefore he is going to be draining money off them for the rest of his contract.

If he went from Everton to Rangers i am guessing he would be on at least 10k a week so even if he only has 18 months left it will cost Gers over 750k.

Would be suprised if they would charge more than 750k for him. More to the point if anyone would pay that for him!

I seem to have destroyed that part of my brain that recalls the position and quality of Michael Ball as a footballer - would someone care to share there thoughts on that?

Was one of the top prospects for an English left back. Went to Rangers for a huge fee ifi remember rightly. Never really made it up there though however he looked really good when he was at Everton!

Played against us about 4 years ago (I think for Tranmere? on loan from Everton?) Midfielder?

They wont be asking a great deal for him, thought it would be a nominal fee. I could on see wages being a problem.

Was a good player and touted as the next England left back. Unforunately has barely played in the past 2 seasons due to injury and the 500 grand situation. Would add class to the defence methinks.

surprised so many seem to have forgotten about him. left back, quality at everton, who sold him to rangers for, i think 7m, might have been 6m, off the top of my head

my everton mate has told me that if he's to go anywhere it'll be back to goodison, especially as they are still owed money from the initial sale to rangers, it's more likely a deal would heppen with them, they need a left back as pistone and naysmith aren't good enough, and sadly they are 3rd in the league, and where he spent most of his career, there's only one place i can see him going

He has never played for Tranmere. Does have one England cap though and is on 20,000 a week.

Plays left back was an exciting prospect.- England under 21 and all that,
injuries,Rangers signed him from Everton.
No longer a good prospect.

Played in Sven's first ever game in charge, replacing Chris Powell at Left Back, cleared off the line in the closing stages!

Any idea of contract length Chris?

An 18 months left could end up costing rangers over 1.5m

Question is what sort of pay cut he would take for 1st team football.

Was rated as one for the future at Everton as a left back, I remember Fergie was tracking him. From memory, did Rangers pay about 7 million for him? And didn't he start playing as a centre half?

A good shout as a signing.

Good player - may be out of our wage bracket - I suppose it depends what anybody else will pay him.

Ends in 2006 according to the Rangers supporting guy I work with. He also said that Craig Moore is available for cheap and he is also on 20,000 a week if we are interested!

I would like to think if we are already thinking of january buys that the quality will be better than a defender who is playing in the Sunday League up in scotland BUT if Dowie wants him, maybe he sees something that we mere mortals can't !!!

Precisely. Left back is, I think, our weakest link.

He is at the Kevin Davies/Danny Cademateri stage of his career. Was once regarded as a very bright prospect, has since faded, so which path is he going to now follow?

Loan with a view to a permanent signing would suit us.

Besides, the last player that we picked up after he'd had contractual issues was a big success :).

Kevin Davies reached a crossroad though. He had the choice of working his nads off and proving people wrong, or doing as Cadamateri has done and become a pointless waster.

Its the same set of crossroads that Mr Ball has reached.

Yeah sorry - I meant, does he go down the Kevin Davies route (re-invent himself), or down the Cademarteri route?

Ball is a good player but he has had an atrocious time with injuries over the past couple of years. however if we could get him on loan, then all well and good.

Michael Ball is very highly rated by an Everton supporting colleague of mine - it's a shame he's had such a problem with injuries. The fact that he's not getting a game for Rangers must make him very keen to change clubs ASAP so he may be willing to take a pay cut if Palace can't match what he's on.

Top quality loan signing.

Sure he s had his fair share of injuries, but was good at Everton forcing his way into the England set up briefly. And Everton were upset to lose him.

If fit, a good signing for us.

If you get him fit then he has the potential to be outstanding. He looked quality for Everton and had the world at his feet when he signed for Rangers. A fit, confident Michael Ball is still IMO the best left-back England has. More defensive than offensively minded (in contrast to Ashley Cole), and very composed. If you could pick him up for as little as the 750K hinted then you might have the bargain of the century, IF he stays fit. But it's a risk because it could all go wrong just as easily.

I do think a return to Everton is a threat to your signing him, but by no means impossible.

Jimbo ?
21-11-2004, 06:44 PM
he's a decent player but i admit i would handle with caution. injury prone, and I wouldnt pay large wages/fee for him.

I have to say that I dont think any deals will be lined up until after these next 3/4 games. we could be rock bottom with out a hope or we culd be looking good in a steady midtable position

Senor Ding-Dong
21-11-2004, 07:19 PM
Should stay well away. Incredibly injury prone, likes a drink and is on 20,000 per week. Never ventures past the half way line and always hits the long ball. Most Rangers fans would say Vignal (on loan from Liverpool) is the better left back which says a lot.

It's a shame how it's worked out as I was delighted when he signed for Rangers.

Have we not used up all our loan signings ??

King William
21-11-2004, 07:24 PM
Loan move I think would be the best bet at present - too injury prone for us to sign him and then he gets injured again. + we would have to pay him decent wages to get him from the mighty Gers

Kirby

There hasnt been any info in the local rags up here about Michael Ball and Palace but I think he would (depending on fee) be a very good acqusition. He is a good palyer and I think that the 500,000 bill round his neck is the main thing stopping him being a regular for the Gers. He came on for Vignal in the old firm game on Saturday and looked good, and can certainly pick a pass.

Alex McLeish has said he will play him before January to put him in the shop window, so maybe he will be watched by the Dowies in the coming weeks.

good signing if the fee and wages are right - He has been fit since before the end of last season but due to the money obigations has been warming the stands at Ibrox.

Moore is also available but do we really need a CB on the books????

cost nearer 8m I think. Definitely better than Granville- not sure he would be willing to take a wage cut though- despite the market being as it is,
