Defiant Babayaro bids for Chelsea new deal
By Matt Hughes and Ken Dyer, Evening Standard
20 December 2004
Celestine Babayaro has turned down loan moves to Crystal Palace, Middlesbrough and West Bromwich Albion to fight for his place at Chelsea.

The Nigeria left-back has made just one Premiership start under Jose Mourinho this season, but is still hopeful of extending his stay at a club he joined seven years ago.

Babayaro is Chelsea's longest-serving player and wants a new contract when his current deal expires in the summer.

He said: "I'm looking forward to playing my 200th game for Chelsea in the next couple of weeks and will definitely stay here until the end of the season. I'm flattered that several clubs are interested in me, but have no wish to leave Chelsea.

"I'm very happy at the club and want to put them into a position where they have to offer me a new contract. If I have to leave in the summer I'll be very sad and would be crazy to go in the middle of a season in which we could win several trophies."

Wages would have been big though - a loan may be the best bet in January if possible

He hasnt got much a chance at Chelsea now Gallas is playing LB & Bridge is on the bench.

Although hes making noises about staying at CFC, it would be great if we had a chance of getting him in January.

Good player...well better than Granville anyway...

Shipp Ahoy!

Muppet! He should have agreed to a loan deal so he can prove his worth to Chelski. Though I don't think he would have picked us over Middlesbrough.

Except that hed have to move house to Middlesbrough.

Certainly could do with him on loan.

Well, at least it proves we are looking for a left back!

Don't think he's amazing, but would be an improvement on Granville.

Very true, just what the doctor ordered. Oh well, onwards & upwards..

He rejects Palace, Boro and Brom because he "wants to win trophies [from the bench]". And then gets sold to Newcastle. Glory hunting w@nker. Enjoy your tupperware Celestine, you won't be seeing anything silver anytime soon.
