I gave up after the first as did the wife, which is very unusual for her as she is one of those people who having started to watch something always has to watch it through to its conclusion.

Just watched the first two episodes of season 1 of Babylon Berlin. Impressive production and really enjoying it. A morphine addicted cop, prostitutes, politics and murder in Weimar Germany.
It's no Heimat, but it's very entertaining. The club song and dance scene in episode 2 is fabulous:

Not sure Heimat - quite brilliant of course - is right comparison. Think mentioned before try Berlin Alexanderplatz, directed by late Rainer Werner Fassbinder. German tv series made in 1980. Doubt on on-demand. Probably DVD only.

I lasted the first 25mins of episode 1 before I came to my senses and turned over.

The first two of Royal Collections with Andrew Graham-Dixon excellent.

Going to get slated for this but the thing on BBC1 Saturday night where they have to get the 100 to join in singing. Not record deal, no stupid sad stories just a good laugh and some good classic songs.

Not sure how many I have seen but it is getting harder to stay interested. Even the locations are getting deary now and the MI5 lady could at least crack a half smile. The main bloke's mockney accent is grinding my gears too. I do like Aisling Bea trying to remember she is supposed to be a Londoner in it too. Hilarious.

Yes, I've got bits of it on VHS, and the DVD box set. Very good.
I used Heimat as shorthand in terms of quality, but you're right Berlin Alexanderplatz would have been more accurate.
Even so, Babylon Berlin has been a cracker.

4th season of Friday Night Tykes.

An utterly compelling car crash of a documentary in which junior American Football coaches and staff vicariously live out their violent sporting dreams and frustrations through the children in their teams, goaded on by parents like demented hyenas.

The kids are great, and there are just about enough decent adults in the show to restore your faith in humanity.

Altered Carbon

Very decent adaptation of the novel, equal parts Trans-humanist, cyberpunk and dystopian Science Fiction. They changed enough to keep it interested, and keep the main story (the murder of Lauren Bankcroft) less convoluted.

This and the Expanse, show that Science Fiction can be as big as anything HBO has to offer.

Any of you got 7 to 12 year-olds in the household? Or have an excitable 7 to 12 year-old still lurking inside you somewhere?

If you do, have a look at Last Commanders on CBBC and iPlayer.

It's a bit like Knightmare or Crystal Maze or even The Adventure Game if you go that far back. Looks a bit like a first person computer game, puzzles to solve, all wrapped up in a continuing story.

Must declare an interest - I'm involved in making it. But that doesn't necessarily mean it's terrible...

Recently finished Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, it was good but not great.

Once I saw Douglas Adams name popup when first watching it I bought the book and started reading it. They don't seem that linked but has just taken the general approach and tried to put Adams' wackiness in to a TV show.

Finished Altered Carbon on Netflix last night, again good show, not great though.

Not sure if I've seen it mentioned on here at all, but just finished 'Friends from College', starring Key from Key and Peele (unless it's Peele), colbie Smolders and a few other reasonably well knowns.

Slightly annoying in that Friends, 'our privileged lives are such a trial' way, but some genuinely funny moments nonetheless.

Certainly the one episode where the architect was resetting the experiment multiple times.

First serious had a funny dig at the length of British comedies - character enjoying a British show that had run for an amazing 16 years - in total 33 episodes - a dig at stuff like Sherlock and Luther.

It's really quite good. Each episode is a stand alone story so you get lots of variation in a series. It does mean the odd episode is not quite up to usual standards but overall it's fantastic viewing. Just to warn you, it can get quite dark though
