Brecon and Radnorshire by-election

A Tory MP convicted over fake expense claims has been unseated by a petition, triggering a by-election. Chris Davies was ousted after nearly a fifth of registered voters in his Brecon and Radnorshire constituency signed a petition to oust him.

In 2017, he secured a majority of more than 8,000 in a constituency where just over 41,000 people voted.

Let's see how the Boris-lovers turn out in force.

He shouldn't be allowed to stand as a Tory candidate.

It was a Lib Dem seat in 2010 and the three elections before that. Welsh Lib Dem leader is standing for it.

Interesting that he didn't have the whip withdrawn or be ejected from the tory party.

He pleaded guilty to the charge, the detail of which was the way he went about claiming 700, which he could easily have done, he broke the law in the way he actually did though.

I am surprised they would stand him again though, as he is unlikely to gain them votes and could easily lose them some. With pressure from both the Brexit Party on the right and Lib Dems on the left they might have difficulty retaining the seat and need to do everything to maximise than chance.

Maz 21-06-2019 02:32 PM

Yup.

Poosence 21-06-2019 02:37 PM

This will presumably be held after the next Prime Minister is in place? I'd expect an immediate Johnson bounce before it all comes tumbling down. Could actually increase the chance of a Lib Dem victory as Brexit party vote may split a little.

He should be booted out for being so stupid for not going back and getting two separate invoices and thinking faking one was a good idea. Does rather bring his judgments into question.

Nth Kent Eagle 21-06-2019 03:28 PM

It's false accounting though. It's serious rather than just being stupid.

AJ's right boot 21-06-2019 10:04 PM

He should be sacked!! As a civil servant I would sacked immediately, rightly so, for doing something similar. Disgusting double standards he is allowed to stand again.

Selhurst300 22-06-2019 07:15 AM

If he stands, surely that will hit the Tory vote.
Who decides when the by-election is held.

It's fraud, and he should be prosecuted. But in MP world it's described as a 'misdemeanor'.

He was convicted earlier in the year for it.

1,500 fine, 2,500 costs and 50 hours community service.

rhino_mik 22-06-2019 06:38 PM

And not had the whip withdrawn nor expelled from the tory party.

Ah, didn't realise. So he should be gone, then.

KYLIE MINEAGLE 22-06-2019 10:47 PM

If he's a repeat offender should be prosecuted. Fraud, as you say is a crime.

redandblue 23-06-2019 06:16 AM

These are the rules they apply to all
