Richard Shaw has left the club

From The Athletic

Richard Shaw has left his role as head coach of Crystal Palace’s under-23 side, The Athletic understands.

The former Palace defender, 51, returned to the club in 2013 to take a coaching role in the academy, and a year later became the under-16 head coach — a role in which he first coached Aaron Wan-Bissaka — before stepping up to take charge of the under-23 side.

Last few u23 games I have been to Derry has taken the lead on the touchline with shaw sitting in the dugout a few fans had discussed this as it seemed strange at the time .

Thanks for all your efforts Rich. A top top guy and Palace through and through.

That’s a shame. Was hopeful he would become first team manager some day.

Pure speculation but I wonder if Shaun Derry’s arrival has led to this and that he is being groomed to eventually take over. Odd to bring in Derry while Shaw was still in-charge.

Conversely it may have been known some time ago that Shaw was going to go and Derry was brought in for a smooth transition.

If Shaw knew then fair enough, otherwise it is abit of a shit move.

Sad to see him go but hopefully he'll get another appointment soon, and maybe even another crack at management

Expat Eagle 29-10-2019 12:09 PM

Thanks to Richard Shaw. Bleeds red and blue and a credit to the club. Great memories.

red&blue_moomin 29-10-2019 12:11 PM

I hope this is because Richard has decided to move on to get more responsibility or control elsewhere and not because the club are elbowing him aside.

If Arsenal have decided to nick him though.....grrrrrrr

Maidstoned Eagle 29-10-2019 12:12 PM

Did wonder why Derry was on the touchline for the U23 games. Good luck to both of them.

Disappointed for him. Gutted TBH. Have no insight/info into why. Just a shame to see him leave the club. I am sure Derry will add experience (playing and management) that the club needs to have at that level going forward but I suspect a lot of the youngsters will have strong attachment to Richard and it may take a while for things to settle down. TBH it's a learning point because the average first team manager doesn't stick around for long either!

Hope Richard lands on his feet somewhere - but without nicking our best players!

Surely it must be to take a management job elsewhere. Our U23 team is going nowhere at the moment, which must be frustrating to manage (and play for).

Gutted ..... hope he doesn't end up as first team coach at Millwall.

His great man marking of Eric Cantona on the night led to cantonas frustration and subsequent girlie kick.

Cantona should have been thrown out of the game for that. Community bloody service in Manchester, b lax.

Richard Shaw was a great man marker.

Sad to see one of the 90s boys go. Does anyone know why?

Ardent Eagle Forever 29-10-2019 01:02 PM

Club are saying to pursue other opportunities.

sw16girl 29-10-2019 01:03 PM

All the best to him in the future - and hope he does well wherever he goes

wrightchipvcfc 29-10-2019 01:05 PM

Do U23 teams ‘go somewhere’?

CommercialStone 29-10-2019 01:52 PM

Black coach replaced by White coach. Has to be a racist move by the owners
