So after our extremely poor performance yesterday I though I'd just post a couple of pictures of the guitars I have recently bought. I think those of you who have guitars of your own or just like music might appreciate them more than other people I know. Would love to hear your opinions on them.....

Nice colour choices, are they both Japanese?
I play a telecaster, so stuff like active pickups and Floyd Rose's bewilder me. Handsome looking axes though. :p

Yea both made in Japan as I think all ESP's are (not sure about the LTD version though). Love the Floyd Rose. Makes the guitar that bit more dynamic and give you the option of dive bombs :p

I'll upload some pictures later but I bought a couple of beauties today.

I've come into a bit of cash and convinced the mrs that they would be good investments !

1974 Gibson Les Paul Signature Semi Acoustic and a 1962 Fender Strat.

I've owned and played loads of Strats over the years but this one with a bit of dirt and volume just puts a huge stupid grin on my face !

A real 62 strat or a reissue? Either way, pics would be very nice. Congrat's.

Tis a real one , one of the first non slab boards so a late 62.
Got refinished in the 70s but other than that it's all original and a bit worn in places.
It honestly sounds amazing and that isn't expectation bias at work !

The Falcon has a Tone King Iron Man attenuator built in, you can still get great tone at very low volumes - one of the big selling points for me.

I wish I had the time to play more often. The Squier strat is a Vintage Modified with 'Duncan designed' pickups. It is a fantastic guitar to play, hard to believe it cost me less than £250 new. The Epi Les Paul and Ibanez RG470 I've had for more than 10 years. I wouldn't part with either of them. Still have the Marshall too, a VS100R. I'm not one for changing :D

That's probably a matter of opinion, but I do have some fun with it :p

That's some nice guitar options you've got there Carlito. Squiers are just exceptional value these days, and great guitars in their own right.
I tried an Ibanez like that once and was really surprised at how much I liked it, skinny neck and all, very comfy.

I need to get some more humbuckers in my life.

Thanks FE. The Ibanez does have a slim neck and inspires confidence when being played. It has Dimarzio Air Norton and Tone Zone pickups in the neck and bridge which can sound a bit Vai/Satriani but are very versatile especially in conjunction with the middle single coil.

'96 American Lone Star strat, with a knackered truss rod. Looking at importing a neck from Warmoth for this as I really like the metallic teal finish. Possibly solid rosewood, or roasted maple with stainless steel frets.

Nice, the HSH confuguration is hard to beat. I'm seriously thinking about it for my strat. I always end up on the bridge SD Pearly Gates+ eventually. Having a humbucker in the neck too can only make things more awesome :)

I think I'm due a Tele. You haven't made that any easier for me! Beautiful guitar. Hope you get the Strat sorted, looks a beauty.

Everyone needs a tele, you know it makes sense! I bought the strat as an ongoing project, the nasty pearloid pick guard really has to go.

Well I can't match those wonderful colours by the OP. Unfortunately it's all 'a bit Wolves' but at least I have my rug :)

I replaced my old Peavey with an Engl Screamer 50, it's fantastic :)

I love the bottom end a humbucker gives. Crunch heaven :D

I bet it is, heard fantastic things about Engl. Your Peavey takes me back to when I had a Laney Linebacker amp. They were very similar.

A long time since I heard anyone mention the Linebacker. It used to be incredibly popular with my school mates and me. We made a stack of guitar and bass combos at one point.

I still have the bass amp version collecting spiders and dust in the garage!

Yes please. As a fan of the Jam they are one of my faves. As for the Laney, I sold it to a mate in the late 90's who still uses it.

Yeah the Peavey has done well and when I replace him I decided that rather than leave him sulking in the garage I would give him life by giving him away on Gumtree for nothing. I hope that he is now screaming out some awesome tones or helping somebody to learn to play.

Currently I play a Sterling Axis3 through a Marshal cfx15: purely bedroom stuff really.

The Axis 3 has split coil humbuckers so I can get strat sounds or a thicker rock crunch.

I'm trying to convince Mrs FF to let me get a better amp (I'm looking at a Vox vt50).

I looked at a VT recently as I wanted a more quiet amp for home use than my Jet City valve. It was nice but didn't sound as good to me as the Blackstar i.d..

If you wanted a true valve amp without the modding the Laney cub is really hard to beat for the cash too. I had one of those until my son pilfered it for his room.

If you get a chance to try either one I think you'll be impressed, you can even choose which valves the amp is going to mimic on the Blackstar which is very cool.

At the risk of sounding nerdy, it should remind you of the Wolfgang because it's the original Wolfgang. In 1991, coincidentally at the same time Eddie van Halen's son Wolfgang was born, Eddie signed with Ernie Ball/Music Man/Sterling and they made the first Wolfgang guitar, though it was called the Eddie van Halen Signature guitar. When he went to Peavey in 1996, they manufactured the same style of guitar and that's when it was given the Wolfgang name. Meanwhile, EB continued to make the guitar too but renamed it the Axis. Mine is the Axis sub (the equivalent of an Epiphone Les Paul or Squier Tele).

Ironically, I'm not a big van Halen fan.

Nice Axis hughff, those are great looking guitars. I've been intrigued by the Music Man Albert Lee for some time, specifically the HH version with rosewood neck.

They're great looking guitars, I'd love a wolfgang with a d-tuna. I played one once, lovely necks.

I picked up a '72 telecaster thinline today which is a bit beaten up but plays really nicely. I'll upload a photo later when I've finished my penance of cooking dinner :-)

Blackstar ID's are great bang for buck. The only reason i didn't go for one was because they are sooooo versatile they are great for experimenting with sounds - all of those valves and effects before you even plug in a pedal - but I already know the kind of sounds I want to play, which tbf are pretty mainstream, a touch of OD to harsh distortion with reverb, sometimes fuzz, all on a H-S-H guitar and that's about it. I like it simple and the Engl does it for me.

Good to see this thread picking up in pace. Great to see all these rigs as well as guitars. The more the merrier! Looks like many of you have gone for a more "old skool" set up based on the kits I see here. Not too much modern equipment which I think is great as the expanse of musical prowess here is pretty vast :)

Might be blasphemous I know, but I've always loved the look and feel of a Telecaster but they were not traditionally good for my music tastes (heavier rock/metal).

Cue me seeing this on my guitar hunt and I decided to pick it up. Modern look to it, plays great and still retains some of that Telecaster charm (others may disagree but Humbuckers for the win!).

See, I'm not sure about that. Certainly you'll get more kick, but does it really sound like a Tele? I have two Teles, one 1989 USA, and a '94 Mexican, both standard Tele set ups. Both sound like I think they should, and there's very little difference in the workmanship of the build. If it's good enough for Wilko...
I wouldn't dream of modifying them.
If I want omph, depth and sustain I use my Les Paul, or my '76 Ibanez Custom copy (which actually sounds better than my Gibson).

As far as my thinline goes , the sound is in the middle of a Tele and an LP. It's got the bottom end of an LP but the trebly top of a Tele which to me is the best of both . Roll the tone off and switch to the neck pickup and it's a jazz guitar . It's already my favourite guitar and I've only had it a few days.

I had it cranked up on Sunday and was giving it some Van Halen 'unchained' and it didn't half sound good at that too. :-)

Probably not - but my reasoning for buying that is I've always wanted a Tele - loved the look (and the sound), but needed it to be beefier for my style of music. I did cop to it being akin to blasphemy in my first post but that is still one sexy and great sounding guitar :p

Love me an LP Jr. This french bloke makes hollow steel Jr's that sound really good. A lot cheaper than a Trussart too.

I had an LPJ for a while in the '90's. It's called Junior for a reason. Very disappointing instrument. Like a Les Paul with its bollocks cut off, and no discernible personality of its own. Looked very nice. Played shit. Like trying to drive a Morris Minor up the side of Everest.
Save up for a Yamaha SG2000, and sell the wife. :)

If people are buying them because they are 'trendy', they don't deserve anything better.

I hear you Stella - I traded a lovely really early 80s squier Japanese Strat in for a LPJ in the mid 80s and immediately regretted it. I have played a vintage one since and it sounded and felt so much better than my relatively modern one. As you say though, they are a student les paul but an early sixties one goes for around £5,000 !

I like the yamaha SGs, always have done - seem to remember Steve Rothery having one back in the day but as is the way nowadays they are starting to pick up in value a bit like the early Tokais. You are looking at very high hundreds for a decent old one.

You're looking at more than that for a lefty one. :(

My lad is tiring of his modern player Jag so I'm flogging that and have ordered him one of the new Danelectro 59M cheapies yesterday instead. He loves a bit of twang and garage rock so hes very excited. I'll post a photo when it arrives later in the week if I can prize it out of his hands !

New addition here today. So, my plan to upgrade my strat with a new neck and pickups turned into a whole new guitar.

I've been liking the looks of the new Suhr Classic Pro, (stainless steel frets, silent single coil system etc.) Then I spotted a nice Black Friday discount, (yes I am scum :)). And this happened...

Looks interesting. How does it feel and play?

It usually takes me a few weeks to get fully accustomed to a new guitar. This one has a fatter neck and different fret profile than I'm used to.

However, it is a beautifully made instrument. All the little bits of attention to detail, like the fret ends are very well done. It feels and sounds amazing.

The bridge was set up to float when it arrived which would usually mean tuning problems, but not with this one.

Anyone fancy a punt on this? Up for auction next month is Les Paul's original Black Beauty prototype. Will probably fetch a few quid.

To be brutally honest , I don't know. It's an FSR that I saw for £400 off and couldn't resist it.

I am currently trying to persuade my missus that all I need now is an ebony Gibson Les Paul Custom and my guitar buying days are over (...apart from the 335 etc ).

Don't play as much as I like but feeling the love for Mr Iommi today.

This is my first guitar. Bought for £35 in 1972.

Someone went to a lot of trouble to create this Zakk Wylde Standard, as I have never seen another apart from the original. Obviously like all Zakk Wylde guitars it has the EMG pickups and a maple neck.

Another Ebay special which I believe started life as a DeLuxe from the 70's as it takes a full size pickups and a maple neck. No idea what the pickups fitted are.

Right then lads. Thought I would revive this thread a bit with my review on the guitars I have and make some short comparisons between the 3 ESP's I currently own.

As I'm sure most who read this thread know each guitar that we own sound different in their own way.

Up first is the ESP Snakebyte signature series. I've only had this guitar for about 2 weeks but holy mother of god it's one bad arse motherfúcker! It seriously does feel like it's going to explode the amp I have (may need to upgrade that!). Bashing out a few riffs with the bridge pickup selected it pushes what I thought a gruff ruff metal sound could be. I will have to start playing around with the tones on my multi FX pedal to hone it in a bit to get an even crisper distortion sound. Playing cleanly through the neck pick up changes this beast of a guitar totally. Goes from a riffing machine to a melodic fresh sounding guitar. I guess you could call this guitar the ultimate Jekyll and Hyde machine.

Next up is my ESP Horizon Standard Series. A fantastic all rounder guitar yet sounds totally different to the Snakebyte. It reins in the ultra metal sound that the Snakebyte brings and produces what I would describe as a "cleaner" sound that's probably more suited to the Maidens and Van Halens of this world. Fantastic neck play and is ultra smooth. Comes with an original floyd rose trem system and it holds its tone like no other. Dive bombing on a natural harmonic is just heaven.

And finally the ESP Eclipse standard series pre lawsuit. This is the lightest in weight of the ESP's that I have but punches out a great tone. As for sound it feels and sounds like a happy medium of the Snakebyte and the Horizon which to me gives it it's own unique dynamic sound. The bridge pickup gives that crunch that I love and the neck gives me a very smooth tone that wouldn't go amiss in some jazz playing. The reason why I got this guitar in the first place was I wanted a Les Paul shaped guitar but I'm not a massive fan of the chunkiness of the necks or the pickups that come with it. Also I have a HUGE fan of ebony fretboards with jumbo frets so this guitar was absolutely spot on. Not to mention pre lawsuit so the cut of the guitar is almost a carbon copy of the Gibson compared to the ones the have on sale now.

So in essence 3 guitars from the same factory and the same company but all 3 are totally different in their own way. I don't think there is anyway in hell I would sell any of these! They are perfect for me and my style of play.

Oops I did it again. This will be my last guitar purchase for a long while now. But I've ALWAYS wanted a Randy Rhoads Jackson. Apparently I'll get it Thursday direct from California. As soon as I get it I'm just gonna go mental and crank everything to 11!

This isn't mine - it's Sheryl Crows, but mine is the same year and colour (1993). It's got P100's on it apparently - I'm not entirely sure what that means, but I love it. No doubt someone will be along shortly to say p90's are better...
