Got to say Hugh I'm not a huge fan of the S1 (is that what it's called ?) I use the 3rd position with the s1 in sometimes but that's about it.
The standard positions are great on the Baja though and the neck is lovely |
I tried one of those chunky necks a while ago - my mod won't have one, of course - and I was not fussed either way. I guess I need to give it a longer go to see if it suits or not. I do often play thumb over so I guess it could work for me.

I've finished my modding so here are some photos. The guitar was a cheap Chinese import but actually quite good to play.
The first thing I did was make Faraday cages for the cavities. Photo 1 is the control cavity but I did it for the pups too. Also in photo 1 you can see that I added a push pull pot (I then switched it into the other position when I decided to reverse the control plate) and a four position switch. The four position switch meant that I could run both pups in series and in parallel. The push pull pot reversed the polarity of the neck pup. It works best with the pups in series and some distortion as it makes the sound less muddy. Apparently it would've been a good idea to reverse the pick up position as well but I only found that out later. Photo 2 shows the control plate back in place, with the switch at the back instead of the front. It was meant to make the access to the phase pot easier but, having played it now, I don't think it's a big deal. I printed a sticker to replace the generic brand Chinese logo - photo 3. If you can't read it, it says Cheap Parts Fun Caster (purely for the initials). I'm thinking of making an actual waterslide transfer but I was amazed at how expensive that was. The worst thing about the guitar was that the bridge buzz. The e strings didn't exert enough pressure to hold the bridge down though the middle strings were fine. I tried thicker strings but it felt awful so I bought some bushells and drilled through (with almost machine like accuracy) the body - photo 4. One new set of nines later and I had a string through guitar. Photo 5 is the finished machine. And all for much less than the price of a magic bus. |

Christmas came a little late for me. My new guitar. It has a third pickup to give an acoustic guitar sound. It's not quite the same as a genuine dreadnought but pretty good none the less.

I'm saving up for a birthday present to myself. I visited the Manson shop in Exeter earlier in the year and had a play around on the Cort MBC-1. A lovely sound and wonderful action, at a fraction of the cost of the Manson DR-1 (that I really, REALLY want!).
Many hours of overtime will be suffered to get my hands on my own one. I hate being poor :( |
Zaph01 , I have to stay away from Mansons or I'll literally have no money left. I live an hour from Exeter and they have 2 of the best guitar shops in the country there imho - Mansons and Project Music.
Anyway I managed to get my hands on Gaz Coombe's old Gibson es335 as a gift for my Mrs as she plays a bit and is a huge Supergrass / Gaz Coombes fan. Nice one Tim, I've got a Laney Cub and it's a cracking amp. How does the Aria compare with the Electromatic Gretsch ? It certainly looks nice !

I acquired a new Martin D-28 a couple of weeks ago after wanting one for about 30 years. No pics yet, but I'm definitely calling it Nigel.
