I think it was pretty obvious after one game he was going to struggle to play in that system in the PL, he's just not got the height or physicality. The biggest issue is that div FdB completely wrecked his confidence by ripping into him at training after that Huddersfield game, and is probably a major reason why he has struggled.

The guy was basically his mentor and signed him for reasonably big money, only to bin him and slate him in front of the squad after one game. :eek: At least he has shown he is capable recently and given the whole Left Back thing a good go.

Really pleased for Jairo

Roy, Ray and the coaching staff have seen that Jairo had the capability to play Left Back and have clearly worked with him, as demonstrated by the improving performances over recent weeks.
I think we might be seeing our future left back, playing with PVA taking a more advanced position.

Would love to see him regular in midfield. His passing is superior to Mist in the squad and looks a yard sharper

All but forced into playing Riedewald we discover that there is a player in there, much like he was all but forced to put AWB in a couple of years ago because of injuries too. I worry players get frozen out by Roy and Wickham is another on that list, not to mention the 24 year old current top scorer in Turkey!

How do you know about that? Where did it come from?

He was dire in that game but it certainly doesn't sound helpful from the manager who should have taken a lot of responsibility for a shocking selection and making lots of changes from the side he had been playing throughout pre-season.

I really hope not. A wingback has everything in front of him and makes the runs, a winger has to receive the ball and turn. Very different and tbf if we was a winger he would already be playing there. The game these days uses the full backs to act as wingers anyway. So keep PVA where he is. Jairo can be great diver for LB and hopefully earn his spot in the middle. Let’s see the best players bubble to the top rather than decide in advance.

I remember him doing a great job at home to Man City two years ago. He has the potential and I'm glad he is showing signs of fulfilling it!

Do actually think he's been outstanding there? I think he has generally done well but I certainly wouldn't say he has been outstanding. From what we have seen so far I would still have PVA back in there as soon as he is available.

Probably because that’s his preferred position and where he has been heading.
I think he has been great at LB for us in this spell and has to be a potential deputy and maybe he will make it his own position but it makes sense for him to get a chance in midfield where he and previous coaches have seen as his best that’s all. But that has to be on merit. Tbh I suspect our current coaches think it’s his best too, but he simply hasn’t shown this much in competitive matches and tbf there is a lot of competition and so no surprise he hasn’t been selected. The awesome news is that ‘something’ has clicked with him and his intensity, impact and belief looks very different. Hopefully he takes that into training and bosses his way into reckoning. PVA will return to the LB slot.

It’s good news all round.

Today - yes, previous games mainly above average. Nothing to suggest he would be any good in central midfield though.

Interesting that Roy has said that he thinks Jairo has found his position. He said after the match that he suggested to Jairo that he should consider LB as a way to get into the team, but he needed convincing to do it.

Wonder if we will redirect funds from a specialist LB into RB or wide forward and just wait for PVA to come back. If Jairo comes through Man City, the Blades and Southampton alright then there is a strong case that he is our No 2 LB and in some situations the first choice.

Just thinking something similar. With his lack of matches in the last couple of seasons could be as good as getting a new player. I also feel this about Connor Wickham if he could stay fit.
