andy barnes

my dad repeatedly tells me that the best player he ever saw in a palace shirt was a bloke called andy barnes. he used to watch him as a season ticket holder at sutton, and my dad told me that palace signed him, had a stormer on his debut but did his cruciates after 20 mins and never played again.

this one's a bit before my time, late 80's/early 90's, anyone else remember him?

jazman 20-10-2004 12:01 PM

I do vaguely remember this name...give me a minute

David of Kent 20-10-2004 12:05 PM

Messy hair, permanent tan, forward from Sutton United that everyone had high hopes for. Remember he was injured but can't remember if he was playing for the 1st team or the reserves at the time.

Best player ever saw in a Palace Shirt

Rings a bell. I think it was around the same time as Salako did his ligaments.

PalaceMonkey 20-10-2004 12:51 PM

It was at that same time Salako did his. They went to the same specialist but Andy's injury was much worse.

He had a good job that he had to give up to become a professional footballer and this kind of messed his life up!
I don't think he ever played in the 1st team though, think he did it in the reserves.

He played at QPR as a sub I believe. There was a write up in the Tizer at about the time he signed that he was a Palace fan.

Dobbo 20-10-2004 01:13 PM

Whatever happened to Andy Tipping ?

ammiller 20-10-2004 01:19 PM

As this was before ARUSSELL's time let me recall from memory:

He came on as sub and was later substituted in his only first team game away to QPR last game of 91-92 season (also Neil Sullivan's only game for us). John Humphrey was the only scorer in a 1-0 defeat.
Although he was signed as a forward he played in the match at Rt Mid. Didn't do much.

He was a nurse either before or afterwards or both.

He used to drink with another reserve at the time called John Budden.

When he done his cruciate, he went to America with Salad. This was after Salad done his knee in again - after originally doing it in October 91 he did it again at the start of 92-93 season.

That's it really.

My records say he played for Woodcote Rovers and Chipstead before Sutton and Palace paid Sutton 70,000. After his op(s) did have 2 games on loan at Carlisle in December 1993. Was he able to return to non-league football?

Dorking .Eagle 20-10-2004 02:15 PM

I recall he played only a small part of one reserve game and did his cruciate, almost exactly the same time as Salako.
There is a picture of him and Salako on the front cover of a home first team programme and both of them have a huge strapping on their knees.

He never played for Palace again, and last I heard he went back to being a mental health nurse.

i played 5 a side football with andy barnes in tooting about 5 years ago. he was a friend of a friend who would turn out for us (tooting fc) when we were desperate. apart from him being head and shoulders above the rest of us in terms of ability he could hit a ball harder than anyone i knew. didn't talk about his brief career at palace but i will endeavour to get some more info.

Just how I remember it. I think Coppell only gave him a run out as a favour as he knew his career was basically fcuked through injury. A bit like Chris Coleman for Wales.

I played cricket against him in Purley's cricket week in 1992, he scored a ton against us but we won the match

He has a brother who was a major poser who taught at Riddlesdown school. Andt was a very nice guy and talented. He may well have established himself it he had not had such a bad injury.

Baron Greenback 12-11-2004 02:17 PM

Blimey, I didn't realise that Mr (Peter??) Barnes was Andy Barnes' brother. He was my PE teacher at Riddlesdown, and you're right - he was a total poser.

the elusive k 12-11-2004 04:03 PM

From memory, he got his injury in his first reserve game for us.
Coppell brought him on from the bench for that meaningless last game of the season at QPR even though he wasn't really fit, basically for sentimental reasons because it was known that he was to retire. Shows what a top bloke Stevie was/is.

elbarno 15-11-2004 10:10 PM

Andy Barnes was turning out for Hurstpierpoint f.c. in the Mid Sussex Division 3 league about 10 years ago, dont know where he is now though.

Zohar Returns 16-11-2004 02:11 PM

Yeah the only time I ever saw him play was away at QPR. He came on a sub and was then subbed himself after about 20 mins. I dont think he touched the ball.

nottsunieagle 16-11-2004 03:49 PM

its a damn shame. my dad made the claim because he used to have a season ticket at sutton and saw him week in week out. does show what a legend stevie is for bringing him on at QPR.

cdselhurst79 18-11-2004 04:49 PM

he is now a psychiatric nurse and is living in dublin with his girlfriend
