Young eagle of the month award……..at the clowns??
|
I believe that Coppell revealed some time afterwards that he hadn’t actually scouted Mortimer but had been flicking through Rothmans looking at players’ stats and they took a punt. He obviously did ok at Charlton but I thought he was crap for us.

Outside a cameo in a cup match at home to Everton in the league cup in October 93' (he also received dogshit abuse from the crowd that night) he barely featured again, and sat on a tidy contract. With the 500k loss we took on Gabiaddini 6 months after signing him, added to the addition transfer fee of Mortimer we spunked 1m of Wrighty's sale with no return.:( |

If I remember rightly Mortimer played about once in 92-93 and once in 93-94. Was a strange and slow motion departure. As Alan Smith told fans a forum in 1994 there was nothing he could do. Mortimer on about £4,000 a week, happy to turn up to training and collect the money and just let his contract run down. Strange behaviour from a guy who looked to have a decent future when the 90s began |

Wow. First time since we did these season threads that there's a game I have zero recollection of. Our reign as ZDS Cup holders continued a little longer

I remember that Why Does Everyone Hate Crystal Palace article in 90 Minutes. For context, it was one of a few similar articles and I'm pretty sure the first team featured were Arsenal. It serves as a good footnote to history as it was accurate. We'd gone from national heroes in April 90 to disliked in the space of 18 months.
It was quite a sudden thing but also needs to be mentioned that 'dirty' Palace had won the Fair Play award for one of the months in early 91 (either March or April) when they collected a single yellow across 5 league games. It didn't help that we'd been somewhat rough in 2 or 3 high profile games in an era where we were rarely on telly and that helped form the narrative. I've always suspected (but might be wrong) that the staff at 90 Minutes had a laugh with it. Half of the staff were Palace including editor Dan Goldstein. |
Just looking at that match report - I had no idea Dean Gordon was featuring as early as 1991. Unlike Southgate, Osborn etc I don't remember his early games - just that he was a beast by 1994

On that 90 Minutes article - fair play to the Charlton or Millwall fan complaining about everyone jumping on the bandwagon! The final comment from 90 minutes was sadly entirely accurate.

Cool story. And love the nostalgia sparked by the shop name 'Our Price' :p:afro: |
Another game I know I was at but have no memory of.
Interesting to note reading the reports: Coleman brought on ‘up top’ for Gabbiadini - a sign of things to come. Coppell saying Marco ‘pales in comparison to Wright at the moment.’ Guessing it was said to motivate the player and get him to work harder and try to be more a part of the squad, but the issues between player and club were becoming clear and his time would come to an abrupt end. |

It's phenomenal to think how little love this season gets. Even now entering Halloween Palace were up amongst the leaders with a game in hand.
When you think of how the 'Pardew 5th at Christmas' team still gets favourable comments on Twitter etc, this team was similar....although the tail off after Christmas wouldn't be quite as dramatic! |
