Went to see Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds at the Dominion last night. Part rock concert, part rock musical. It falls between the two stools, so for many it won't hit the mark, and has received mixed reviews as a result. The Dominion is a big theatre but if you're going to have 50 people on stage, actors & musicians, then you need a big place to make it pay. I would think it was a third full which was disappointing, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It won't be for everyone, and it's easy to pick holes in the whole concept, but as a musical spectacle it was hugely impressive.
Wayne's 70's Rock music stands the test of time and it was a flawless rendition from the band & orchestra of his original score.
There's nothing more spectacular in the West End at the moment. Outstanding special effects, but essentially it's all about the music. Understandably, there are plenty of cheap deals about - so if this is your bag, don't miss out.
