For China, its one country, two system of oppression. In China, they wouldn't have had to bundle them into the boot of a car, they'd have just openly rounded them up.

Thats what they mean by two systems, one just has to be a bit more subtle because it could have minor economic problems.

The booksellers being "disappeared" was a prelude to the extradition bill widely viewed as an attempt to legalise the practice of carting anyone Beijing doesn't like (including people merely visiting HK) off to China to face their party-controlled legal system. The government insists it is "to close a legal loophole" but nobody seriously believes the HK government would refuse an arrest and extradition request from Beijing.

It is not hard to see why the vast majority of ordinary folk see this as a step too far, effectively the end of "one country two systems" and the protected freedoms it enshrines.

To view the link you have to Register or Login, in itself a clear indication it has no clue what to do, as the content of the announcement demonstrates. They continue to push the lie that BJ/HK have nothing to do with excessive police violence or the use of triads as proxy agents, and the farcical claim that "foreign forces" are "collaborating" to foment unrest (merely making Beijing look paranoid and delusional). They are hanging HK out to dry - the leaders have no clue what to do, the protesters should be tried under the law where offences have been committed, but so should the police and other actors. No way the protest movement is going to back down until there is some sort of concession - so more violence it is then.

BBC World Service radio ran an excellent feature today about China's possible response to the protests. Here it is, available for mp3 download:

Personally, I think Britain has to take a lead on Hong Kong, and defend the population's rights as covered by the 1997 agreement.

China doesn't like being criticised, but they need to honour the agreement.

Thanks for this - very interesting and well produced. Much of what is said is true - creeping change over years, aversion to a military crackdown - but it seems to assume the people will be persuaded by a cleverer Chief Executive to quietly accept their fate of eventual total China-isation. This is really very unlikely and misreads how much people cherish their freedoms.

Anyways To view the link you have to Register or Login for the police. Yesterday's and Saturday's confrontations have produced blanket condemnation in local media at the liberal use of teargas in narrow residential streets with the resulting slam dunk of old people and children overcome.

I would agree, but there's zero chance of Boris doing this unless he has a pressing need to distract attention from misdemeanours elsewhere or he's keen on some proper jingoism to boost support before a general election.

I don't know much about the Opium Wars, but I'm not sure if they do Britain much credit?

Britain made a shitload of dosh out of drug running to China and like all drug runners it had to be enforced a couple of times.
Not so good for China though, before the Opium wars it was the biggest economy in the world and after it had halved.
In the end they started to grow their own, to India's loss.

It wasn't just Britain the French got into it as well.

Pretty much, yes.

Next week the protests are due to come to the town where I live.

Sorry to bring economics into a political situation but if this carries on and gets worse you are going to get very significant capital flight.

Police brandishing rifles and tear gas guns in the MTR (underground) one stop along from me an hour or so ago.

Protesters arrested and charged with rioting without bail (10 years inside), whilst bought triads from last Sunday released without charge or bailed on charges of illegal assembly. The wanton corruption in play in this latest development has inflamed tensions still further with parents and friends of the arrested protesters, most of them teenagers, gathering in their 100s outside Kwai Chung cop shop just up the road. Cops come out in riot gear and brandishing guns pointing at people randomly at close range, until the crowds force them back inside the nick.

No need to apologise - it's already starting to happen. It is a disaster for HK and a disaster for China.

Possibly, though short term at least unlikely. There an infestation of pro-Beijing bots sprung up on faceache and twatter drowning a lot of anti-extradition posts with bollocks about how anti-patriotic protesters are and benign Beijing is, etc. I'd wager this is China sponsored in the same way Russia influenced the Trump and Brexit votes. So they are clearly seeking to control as much of the narrative as they can, no doubt carefully recording all the names as they go.

However there's an overwhelming groundswell of support behind the protests (~80% of the HK population) so they have their work cut out on that score. I have seen a few instances of prominent journalists and twitter posters targeted by pro-Beijing media - accused of being CIA, appearing to be followed etc. - but it's obviously the big-time influencers who will be targeted first, rather than small time commentators like me.

I did notice though the other day an "HK government official" viewed my LinkedIn profile....
