Given he played a game yesterday in Turkey I doubt it very much.

Surely Moody had his hands all over the signing of Palace great Jordan Mutch and Campbell both who were at Cardiff.

Signed the wrong young Scandi strike. Erling Braut Haland(Alf’s son) has scored an incredible 17 goals in his first 9 games for RB Salzburg including a hat trick in the champions league last night. It’s obviously all hindsight but what is interesting is that according to the transfermarket.co.uk he only cost £4.5m despite his big reputation. That does make you wonder how on earth we ended up spending (a reported) £9m plus add ons on Sorloth. I think the Sorloth transfer is one of the best examples of how you get your pants pulled down if you wait to transfer deadline day to sign a player in a position you are clearly desperate for.

Particularly, if you are negotiating with the master of transfers and the moneyball approach, Matthew Benham, owner of both FC Midjtlannd and Brentford. He also owns one of the most successful odds making and punting operations in Britain. Probably pretty good at bluffing in poker as well as transfer negotiations.

At least transfermarkt still has a market value of £5.4m on Sorloth so all is not lost.

He is of more value to us than Benteke by a long shot, both in terms of actually having scored recently and monetarily . We will have lost a huge amount on Benteke once he has gone. His wages alone could have bought sorloth 3 times let alone the 30 mil its cost us to have the donkey in the shirt. We loaned the wrong player .

We have lost nothing on Benteke as without his goals in his first season we would have gone down. Indirectly, that first season of his was pivotal in us staying up as that was the start of the big TV money. In hindsight we should have sold him for profit after that first season.

We would not have sold him for profit, we paid an absolute max for him, a player that had a major Achilles injury.

We have paid £16M for Sorloth.
Benteke is on £100k/week, which is £5M/year. He signed a four-year deal, meaning our wages outlay will have been £20M for him, which is enough to cover the cost of Sorloth’s transfer (just once, not 3x).

Also, you are forgetting the 15 league goals Benteke got in his first season, which arguably kept us up. How much is that worth to us? Sorloth has looked like a deer in headlights every minute he has played at this level.

Still, don’t let facts get in the way of a good old Benteke rant. Boring

Huh?

How do you know without CB we would have gone down?

It's a fair assumption, albeit an assumption.

We haven’t gone down without him scoring in any of the other seasons for us. If we had kept Murray or spent £30m on other players we could have easily stayed up.

It's a reasonable assumption to make. Take Benteke and his 15 goals away and we're down.

It doesn't work like that in real terms as someone would of course have played instead, but would Sorloth have scored the goals Benteke did, and also finish on 15? Unlikely but it's arguing a complete unknown. Basically pointless.

The only known that cannot be argued is that along with everything else treated in isolation, his 15 goals kept us up.

That's arguing a complete unknown. We could have kept Murray and he lost form completely? We could have signed Aguero for £30m and he got injured for 12 months? We could have signed Messi and he refused to play under Sam Allardyce cause he didn't like buying him pints of wine at the Christmas Party? They are all hypotheticals.

A fact that cannot be argued, is if Benteke had scored considerably less than 15 goals that season we'd have gone down.

But you are giving no wiggle room to the other side of the argument. It’s also fact that we have survived all our other seasons in the premier league without Benteke scoring goals. Given that, surely it is reasonable to think that if we had spent that £30m in another fashion we could have stayed up. We stayed up last season with a record points total and Benteke scored 1 goal. It’s not fair to just say take 15 goals out of that team in that season and we would have gone down. Football doesn’t work in that way. We could have spent £30m on two midfielders who scored 8 goals each or a defender who would have made up for the goal shortfall or a forward who scored 5 goals but made us a better team and so we won more points. There is more than one way to skin a cat.

You are also arguing a complete unknown... that if we spent a similar amount on a different striker that he wouldn’t have scored the same or more. We have survived the last two seasons without CB’s goals.

But again, wiggle room is all ifs and buts. Arguing hypotheticals to back up an assertion doesn't actually prove anything. Benteke's replacement could have been better, the alternatives could have been better, if my Aunt had bollox she'd be my uncle etc. but they could have failed, the new midfielders could have scored 1 each, my Aunt doesn't have bollox.

Benteke did score 15, and because of those 15 goals, we stayed up.

Benteke scored 1 last season and we stayed up. Other players chipped in with goals that he didn't. That cannot be argued. Other players did not chip in with an additional 15 goals the season Benteke did. To argue whether someone could have is irrelevant, the fact remains, they didn't.

I'm not arguing an unknown at all? I am making the point Benteke did score 15 goals, and without those 15 goals Benteke scored we would have scored 15 goals less. To argue others could have scored those goals, someone else might have scored more is just as relevant as no one else could have scored them or someone else could have scored less. It's entirely hypothetical.

To argue someone else would have scored those 15 is purely guesswork surely?
