On this day ...... Feb 14th 1976. Chelsea 2 Crystal Palace 3.

On this day ...... Feb 14th 1976

Another year on .... 44 years ago ... where have the years gone??

No apologies for posting this one more time ......yes, it's that time of the year again ....

Forget Valentines day, I remember this date for one reason, and one reason only.

Stamford Bridge, FA Cup fifth round. Feb 14 1976.

Chelsea 2 Crystal Palace 3.

I was 15, my first exposure to football hooliganism first hand, and remember the whole day as if it was yesterday!!

From getting on the bus in the morning for the 2 hour journey, the intimidation queing to get in, Allison going to the Shed and doing "thumbs down, 3-0", going 2 nil up, horses on terraces, Peter Taylors winner, my Chelsea mates not waiting for me afterwards, the game on MOTD, coats for goalposts isnt it???

And for all you unluckly people who havent seen it yet ...

Fantastic result, thankfully was in the stands but it was from that day my somewhat unreasonable hatred of Chelsea was born.

That is one of the top 5 days ever such a shame the semi-final at the same ground was such a let down.

Big Mal will always be my favourite manager just for that cup run and the fedora alone

What a player peter Taylor was. Wolf could do with taking lessons from him. And don Rogers come to that. Skill application and attitude.

I had a signed photo of Peter Taylor blu tacked to my wardrobe and used to give him a pep talk before every game. (He was wearing a very chunky Starsky and Hutchesque knitted cardie in the photo).

Anyway, that's by the by. Being only 9 and with a dad who was no Palace fan, I was listening to it all on LBC in the lounge. Remember kicking the shit out of the sofa when they equalised and then going mental, leaping all over the furniture when Taylor made it 3-2. Happy, happy days (except for the SF of course ).

And Chelsea’s two scorers both ended up playing for Palace.

I got Tayor's autograph so many times that in the end, he knew me by my name.
A thoroughly decent man
After a midweek game, I got my older brother to once again queue up for his autograph in my Palace autograph book (I was too shy to ask and brother hated doing it for me) and he came out to do signings and asked my brother why I wanted his autograph yet again.
He then went on to ask if we could wait 10 minutes. He took my Palace autograph book, went back into the changing room and got the autograph of every Palace player.
I don't care what he did as our manager, he's a Palace legend.

I bring this up every time there is a thread about this game... There was a bus shelter at the top of Westmoreland Road near Bromley South that before the game a Chelsea fan had graffitied (sp?) "14/2/76 The St. Valentine's Day Massacre".

The great thing was it was left on there for years for perpetuity... or at least until they replaced the shelter many many years later. As I caught the 119 there every day for about 2 or 3 years after the game, it never failed to make me smile every dark, damp cold morning!

My older bruv even took me to Wembley when he got picked for England (as a 3rd division player, he was that good) Greenwood, I think, only put him on as a sub for the last 5 minutes.
I cried my eyes out when we sold him to Spurs.

Top day out, even better result. Peter Taylor was unstoppable. I was stood next to couple who had brought along a pair of binoculars! Scary day though, but not as scary as Sunderland.

Come to think of it Leeds, Chelsea and Sunderland were ALL extremely dodgy . All away, all mega results . That was one hell of a ride, until we were kicked out of it by the Southampton scumbags. May Peter Rodrigues rot in hell, but that is another story.

Peter played 4 times for England scoring twice both goals against Wales. I seemed to remember Big Mal getting slaughtered by the press for paying 100k for a 3rd division player, a lot of money in those days, turned out to be a bargain. He was sold to Spurs for 400k. I can remember he had a great skill of tackling from behind taking the ball cleanly, it properly be given as a foul these days. His all round game make him a better player then Wilf in my opinion, although it is hard to make a comparison with players from different times.

Don't forget we played Millwall home and away in the second round, and Scarborough in the third round, and they weren't exactly welcoming!

I would agree though that Sunderland was probably the scariest.
