Because the first group you mention were the crucial demographic who didn't vote the way they were supposed to, and they did so in a big way.
This wasn't restricted to the north, but happened in the east and also working class areas everywhere outside the big cities. Therefore they 'delivered' the unexpected vote for Leave.

All other demographics, including the second group you mention, simply voted as expected.

The 3 million or so disenfranchised voters that Cambridge analytica found and sent hundreds of adverts too on Facebook made the difference.

Not labour voters, not conservative voters; traditional non voters.

True. But if we pigeon-hole them further they are largely working class or underclass. Many of them were disillusioned, ex-labour voters. Very, very few of this group have ever voted tory. This is why Labour knows it has to tread very, very sensitively - not just to avoid upsetting 35% of its current vote, but also millions of its 'natural' support base.

Not sure how far the Ch4 programme on it last night can be believed. They suggested it was voters that hadn’t voted for 20 years.

I’m not sure labour have much to lose in that respect. Arguably the cons have a more compromised position with less of a swing either way. (58 leave, 42 reamain as opposed to 63 remain, 37 leave).

Just re-watched the quote. It was 3 million voters that “had never voted before”. “Disenfranchised and angry.”

It wasn’t twenty years as I thought - it was never.

Neither party need to be scared of that.

*from a probably fictional programme based on facts. So hmm.

Nearly all the big cites voted remain, with huge working class populations. So did Scotland, Northern Ireland with Wales split.

Whatever was expected, it was mainly well off and middle cksss tories that were the back bone of the leave vote.

Young working class voters everywhere mainly voted remain.
