You could argue rail privatisation is a victim of its own success. It carries vastly more passengers on vastly improved rolling stock.

I don't know what planet you live on but British Rail was just terrible, filthy with atrocious rolling stock that wouldn't even be allowed today.

If it is nationalised the filth will return almost immediately and the rolling stock will start to deteriorate.

I will not be going lib-dem the most they can hope for with the FTP system is 20+ seats and coalition with the tories.

We have been there before.

What would they do for their plush ministerial cars back?

Ditch their brexit policy they would have to.

And they would.

more utter bollocks..

The fact it carries more passengers is nothing to do with its ownership. actually BR despite its many faults impressed european railways by how much they did whilst given so little money in its latter days.

Skint is exercising his ring piece again. Much of BR was profitable when it was privatised. There were many excellent services, reasonable and transparent pricing and a cohesive national timetable. I travelled widely and often all across the country, in comfort, on stock with plenty of baggage capacity and post vans for easy transportation of bikes. I even took a moped on BR trains a couple of times, without protest. Nobody would have contemplated, if available, booking a domestic flight instead of a train, because it was cheaper. I've done that on several occasions since privatisation. And on top of this, the franchises got the contracts for a steal, and have been the subject of state subsidy ever since. And you would have thought your average patriotic Brexiter or Tory might be thankful to have this national asset rescued from foreign ownership, in some cases.

I think you really are suffering first past the post blindness. What do you think happens in coalition governments around the world?

The majority gets the majority of their issues through but not all and on a tempered basis, the minority party gets a nod here and there and gets to temper the majority's most extreme or excessive policy.

It is ******* childish how Labour supporters blame the Liberals for Tory policy.

There is no way the Liberals will ditch their position on Europe. One which they have consistently held and campaigned for, unlike JC who died on Brent Cross to save you from your remaining sins and has empowered a Alt right coup through his dogmatic incompetence

To get back into power would the lib-dems go along with Johnson's deal?

They have an out with revoking as the deal is EU friendly and they can work on it.

So I think they would.

Sadly I think only Farage can stop Bullingdon unless there is massive tactical voting. If middle class students allowed Canterbury to remain Labour whilst manual workers on the estates like Hersden voted Tory then it would be very ironic.

You must live in a parallel universe. Maybe it was shaved at the end to make it saleable but no way did it make a profit otherwise. It was one of those industries that historically made a loss as an employment soak.
As for not flying, feck off, I did loads of work around the country in the 80's and if it was for a day it could only be by plane.
If the government have been funding the franchises show a link, otherwise its nonsense.

Government funding (subsidy) of the private rail companies represents about three or four times as much as BR received through the 70s and 80s. There's a fact for you. Government's own figures. If you flew around the UK for work in the 80s, you were in the minority. Ideology seems to blind your basic ability to recognise the truth. Either that, or you're just a really poor troll.

One good improvement whether under a nationalised railway or privately run railway would be to find a way to get freight back on the railways. Reduce congestion on the motorways, A roads as well as towns and villages around the UK at the same time reducing pollution.

Ah the BAC111, what a crock of shit that was.
Trains in the 80s had already become a joke. Give it up, youll be asking for the return of the Mallard next.
One word inflation.

Is the right answer. Can it happen you only need to look in the last few days at Iran for an example. Venezuela is another example. Russia China .....
We live in a country where we take our freedoms without question. Yet offer free broadband and the left are calling it a wonderful opportunity for all. Reverse it would take not a lot to limit the freedoms we take for granted away.
I have argued this before the answer is to give the opportunity to all to those unable to access the Internet through lack of computer phone tablet with access to the existing infrastructure run privately as a right those on low incomes . How that is done would be far more in line with the social policies we need.
Free dental checks I am assuming this is a metroplitain lefties issue as it seems Londoners far less likely to seen a dentist than others in the country. Free dental care is already available to Under 18 low income families. Not even going into there are not enough dentists now with 50 percent of the country visiting a dentist every two years.
