Perspective is key:
Ross McCormack went to Fulham £10M in 2014 and then to Villa for £12M in 2016.
Scott Hogan went to Villa for £15M in 2017.
Jordan Rhodes got a couple of £10M moves.
Assombalonga went to Middlesborough for £15M in 2017.
Lys Moussett cost Shef Utd £10M in 2019.
And who can forget Brewster costing Shef Utd £23.5M in 2020.

The above players never did anything in the Prem. We can easily get double our money if Mateta keeps playing the way he is, if anything a relegated Prem club will bid for him.

I would imagine as part of agreeing to a lower fee they have insisted on a sell-on. Would be hilarious though if we turned him round in the same window for instant profit!

Jurgen Locadia at Brighton, too. Cost something like £10-15m a few years ago, did absolutely nothing, recently left for nothing.

They also paid something like £15-16m IIRC for Alireza Jahanbakhsh, who did nothing and left for a fraction of the original price.

That has been suggested in the latest SW bit, aggregated from elsewhere, but it looks like idle speculation:

On Thursday, Blick stated FC Basel have Mateta ‘at the top of their list’ to replace Arthur Cabral, who is set to join Fiorentina.

FT now claim that Palace, after buying Mateta, could enter into negotiations with Basel ‘alone, without Mainz sitting at the table’.

More likely if Mainz need cash now for wages or a fee on a player they want then taking a guaranteed sum now that is the bulk of the fee we might have paid maybe in the summer, could be useful to them. It also gets rid of a player they don't want. Then if you put add ons in the deal that make up the rest of the previous fee or even take it over a bit if he really takes off then we could be sweetening the pot longer term to get them to agree to a lower sum up front.

Post the window closing I think the opportunity goes away and we'll back to being 50/50 if he stays or goes at the end of the season.
