His career as a striker, having been prolific at junior and youth levels, was on the wane. The move to full back was inspired where after a shaky start he was brilliant and still had an eye for goal. Up there with the best full backs we have had.
RIP Paul (although you will always be 'Doris'). Taken far too young ![]() |

RIP Paul. Sold my Dad your comp tickets outside the Old Stand quarter of an hour before you played against Portsmouth in the league cup in 77ish. Also signed my "There and Back Again" book in Allders in 79.
Anyone remember that free kick he bent round the wall at home to (I think) Sheff Wed in the early / mid 80s? |

I stretched side-foot close in at the far post IIRC, right in front of the Palace fans. I had enough for a pint of beer after picking the coins up, so in a round about way Mr. H. bought me a drink!

I can remember when the players used to come back on the special trains with the supporters in the late seventies. The players would have a segregated carriage but would usually also walk down the train. The players would have buffet meals and drinks of beer or wine,. After a game at Bury Paul pissed in an empty wine bottle and left it on the table before disembarking at Euston. It was common practice that the cleaners would have a quick taster from the unused wine bottle so he had left them un unexpected surprise. Sad news for his family who of course had that tragedy when his young son drowned in a swimming pool when on holiday.

RIP - great memories and a real stalwart of both the team of the eighties and my subbuteo teams. The real one was a bit more reliable and successful than the one with the wobbly base, which also occasionally got sat on by our cat.

I played for a team up there and a few of our lot knew both him and Martin. Think they lived near Milne Park. RIP Paul - Thanks for the great memories

So sorry to hear of Paul's passing, thoughts and prayers with his Family. A fine player for our club one good thing Terry Venables did was to move him to right back. Well deserved player of the year twice, also had a Testimonial Game which was when we were in decline. Always felt he was released to early he helped Oxford United win the then third division, and gave good service to Millwall and Colchester United. Along with brother Martin was the second pair of brorhers to play for the club after Fred and Albert Dawes

One of the select few to have not only scored for Palace against both Brighton and Millwall but he did so in the same season 1977/78; Brighton[A] Oct 77, 1-1 & Millwall[H] Jan 78, 1-0.
