You cannot compare then to now with regards to construction as there was none of or very little health and safety, plus we owned the whole foot print and did not have to navigate around Sainsbury's etc.

Cost ? I did know once upon a time but cannot recall, a figure of around a million £'s seems to stick in my mind. Don't forget A.J.Wait's company built it so I expect we had mates rates
I see we got 43,000 at home to Borough on 4th April. Was the Arthur under construction then?

Yes it was and not a chance that would be allowed today, but every home match during the building of the stand supporters were on the terraces below. There was a plywood fence to separate the fans from the plant and materials at the top of the bank.

The terrace was rebuilt into two levels with new toilets and refreshment bars. The old grass bank at the top was concreted over. Work started as soon as the last home game was over and the work completed in time for the opening game v Moan Utd

I think there is a little poetic licence there. Work was already underway in December 68. By April the superstructure was up and the roof on. I think the 68 days refers to the interior work, putting in seats, toilets, refreshment bars etc. The terrace section that formed the Arthur enclosure was the original terrace on the Park Road side.

No the roof on the Arthur improved the atmosphere as so much sound in the open three sides Selhurst was lost. The 60's generation of Holmesdale singers moved to the Park Road during the promotion run in to take advantage of the new acoustics the roof on the stand in construction supplied.

Most moved back to the Holmesdale the next season as the Arthur Enclosure was more expensive than the Holmesdale. A few remained and as today we had two groups of singers at Selhurst.

Not sure if this link will work, but on British Pathe there is an interesting clip of construction work on the Whitehorse Lane, Park Road and Holmesdale from that Summer of 1969.

According to the thread in the previous post, where Arthur Wait's daughter Maureen posted a message, the Arthur Wait Stand was largely funded by the man himself and so in effect did not cost Palace at all, AW actually spent a considerable amount of time working on the site himself too, no mean feat as he had turned 59 years old before the stand was completed.

I do seem to remember an old thread where Palace fans subscribed towards the cost of the construction work, a sort of loan against future season tickets if I remember correctly?

Incredible legacy he left the club combined with rise from 4th tier to division 1. Particularly as the clubs history before this was in old 3rd division south mainly

I believe the new main stand is going to be built over the existing one which will continue to be used.

I am intrigued to see how this will work.

Towards the start of this it looks like there is still a curve of terracing going from the Whitehorse to the Arthur

Just found this on the 40th Birthday of the Arthur thread-

Arthur Wait was my father. I should like to correct the comment that his company made a profit out of the construction of the Arthur Wait Stand. This is not so. In those days the clubs were all privately financed and so I believe that largely his own money was used to finance the stand. He retired from his building company at the age of 60 and decided to build the stand himself - as site agent - in the closed season. He imported much of his labour from ex-staff around the south coast where most of his building operations had been in place. Not allowing anyone to leave the job for more time than was necessary, for instance travelling to and from work, he purchased beds and all associated items to allow all the working staff to eat and sleep at Selhurst Park. During that period he lost 3stone in weight, but adored every minute. The stand was completed and ready for the start of the following season. As a family we were all immensely proud of this great achievement. And as a footnote I should like to add that AJ never took any financial rewards in any way from Crystal Palace indeed it is mooted but never proved that his personal investment in the club during the 50s, 60s and early 70s was in excess of £3m. So please - let's get the record straight. MM

That's from Maureen, Arthur Wait's daughter. She very occasionally posts on Hy Money's facebook. Hy took her wedding photos!

A nice shot of groundsman Charlie Catlett on the mower. He held that position for many years before handing over to Len Chatterton.

In 1969 I was 18 and leaving school. As a combined birthday/leaving school present my mother (sadly my father had passed away) gave me the money to loan the club which meant I had a complimentary season ticket in the Arthur Wait enclosure (my choice - I could have had a seat) for ten years (through all that inflation period) and the offer of my money back at the end.
