Knife Crime

Not sure if there is a thread on this, nearly everyday we have reports of people being stabbed. Big question I know but why? What has changed fin our society so much that knife crime seems almost acceptable?

The whole problem is exaggerated

Violent crime was higher in the early 00s during Blair's time.

"Funding for children’s services has been slashed by a third since 2010, research shows, as experts warn more young people are being pushed into violence and criminal exploitation as a result."

" Government figures showed over four million children in the UK were living in relative poverty in 2018. That’s one in three. Now The Big Issue has learned that this number will rise over the next five years as Universal Credit takes hold, increasingly pushing more and more families into poverty."

Also cuts to police.

It's not hard to find the reasons.

The usual tory apologists will bury their heads in the sand and cheer on Boris as he builds more prisons to house the UKs neglected generation.

What are Police crying wolf about exactly?
I understand the argument of cut backs, under funding, the growing gap between the wealthy and poor. However this surely would cause civil unrest against the government, not the upsurge in violent crime like we are seeing?

The thing is Pallet, on the BBS everything wrong in Christendom since the flood is the fault of the Tories. Outside of Christendom it's the British.

I would'nt say its exaggerated as there clearly is a problem but yes you are right. Violent crime figures have actually dropped.

However, it is worrying that many kids are now carrying knives be it if they are in a gang or your 'normal' teenager. It's seen as the norm.

Kids listening to sh*t music. That monotonous beat and crap lyrics frazzles their wee little brains.

I'd be surprised if stabbings aren't a daily occurance in the UK and probably always have been - The seperation of knife crime out from statistical data is more of a new thing and its certainly amplified the reporting.

It certainly seems that this specific form of violent crime is rising (although interestingly the driver behind a rise in knife related crime is usually a result of the success of police initiatives around firearms offences).

Of course, it seems to be more or a media thing as well, because its London. Glasgow had decades of being one of the most stab happy places in Europe and the media never really paid any attention, despite an appalling murder and attempted murder rate.

Bit like how Gun Crime was a big focused thing when it was London or Manchester in the 90s, despite the problems of Nottingham (where the Trident operational approch was originally developed and operated - Nottingham had a higher incident of gun crime and shootings, per capita, than both London and Manchester).

There is definately a problem with murder and stabbings in London, but its not quite as 'dramatic and new' as its being presented as.

A common phenomena of a fear of crime (Five years for carrying a knife doesn't compare as a deterent compared to being stabbed to death).

A lot of people carrying knives are likely doing so because the threat of knife crime or its perception. During the worst times of the Glasgow knife crime, parents were buying their kids machetes as birthday presents on the basis that not having access to a weapon was dangerous (the assumption being that no one in certain areas and estates was 'exempt' from an all pervasive threat).

This is a peculiar phenomena, that you generally don't see in the UK with firearm possession, simply because of the availability of knives compared to firearms (and the expense). Gangs certainly play a part as a driver in this escalation of violence as more 'professional' gangs vie for territorial control and drug profits - but the problem is self fullfilling, because a rise in possession of weapons for defence tends to result in a use of weapons outside of self defence (ie. you get in a fight with someone who doesn't pull a knife, but you end up stabbing them because how the human brain and flight / fight response operate aren't controlled and rational but survival driven.

Is there a solution? Probably not, the Glasgow Public Health approach makes sense, and has worked there. Legalisation of drugs could function a significant value (removing a criminal market that people are being murdered over and reducing the focus of the police).

Lots of reasons for stabbings mainly drug trade fighting over post codes low police numbers so less chance of being arrested even if they do get caught a judge will probaly give a low punishment so will be back on the streets pretty quickly so not realy a deterrent but average person be unlucky to get caught up in a random stabbing some will be unlucky but mainly they will be gang linked in some way even hanging around with a gang music ect.
