Texts through Mobile phone

I have a Nokia mobile phone and use Virgin on a pay as you go basis . I would only use internet on phone in my house , through my BT broadband router as to not incur charges . Someone told me I could send free texts as long as I am in my house as they would use my bt router and would come off my data usage ? ( I do not buy any monthly data allowance from virgin ) Surely this cant be true , free texts ?

Don't think that's strictly true. However most people just get Whatsapp which is free, as long as the other person is on there too of course.

They probably mean the application WhatsApp which does texting via the internet/WiFi.

As far as I am aware no mobile virtual network operators like Virgin allow Wifi calling and its features. You can surf via broadband at home but Virgin doesn't allow the App/phone enabling to allow voice or text features. EE the host provider for Virgin does but it appears that secondary operators using the main networks lose this feature no doubt as one of the cost cutting or restricting measures. I am not sure if there is anything BT have on the router side though that would allow this via your broadband provider independent of the phone provider?
