Was introduced to JM by a good mate who thought my musical parameters needed expanding some more. 'This guy plays a fusion of jazz, folk and blues' he said. I listened and I was hooked. First album he played me was Grace and Danger, some of the most heartfelt and beautiful choons I had ever heard (eg Sweet Little Mystery).

However, for some reason it wasn't until 1990 in London when he was touring/promoting the Apprentice album (another goodie) that I finally got to see the man in concert.

Amazing voice, amazing presence, felt I was taken on a spiritual voyage. 'tastic

I may well have seen him on the same tour..I don't remember exactly when it was. Certainly around that time. Saw him at a converted old theatre (seats ripped out) close to Clapham Junction (again memory fails for the name of the place or where exactly it was) . Absolutely excellent.
Youtube is an brilliant source for loads of JM live.

I've not been on this thread. Amongst the many and varied genres of music that I love, folk is certainly one of them.

I used to go to Oxford Street HMV to buy Folk Roots magazine every month and was a regular at The Bracknell Folk Festival in Southill Park Arts Centre. I've been to Fairport Convention at Cropredy a few times and other fantastic festivals and gigs over the years

I'll have a read back through and catch up

My recollection is the Shaw Theatre, off the Euston Rd.

Have had to play that Apprentice album this morning to remind me of what great music is

Saw John Martyn playing support for Sandy Denny (and band) at the Festival Hall in 1971. I think it was Sandy's first performance after Fotheringay split up. John Martyn was brilliant. I also saw him at the final Rainbow Theatre concert along with Procul Harum and other acts. Favourite songs were Spencer the Rover and Bless the Weather and of course May You Never.

Someone once said 'lost love and deep regret will bring any man to his knees'

This song epitomises that sentiment. Beautiful, one of his best....

I am a huge Judy Collins fan and saw her latest show two nights ago. She’s promoting the Winter Stories album which I think is pretty good. What you get with this line up is a three piece Americana band from North Carolina and a well known (apparently) singer from Norway (Jonas Fjeld). He looks like an accountanut but actually is good value. The whole show is excellent and Judy adds a couple of hits and some great stories and jokes. She is 80 so the vocal range is not quite what it was but she has done voice training every day for the last 60 years so she still hits most of the notes she needs too. It’s a great night out....See the UK dates here:- To view the link you have to Register or Login

I heard a version of the moody blues song question many years ago when i was serving in germany and it was fantastic Definitely a folky slant on it and i have searched very hard since to track it down but cant find it anywhere. All i can tell you is that it had a female lead and i heard it around 1990 , anyone who could shed some light as to its artist / artistes ?

Long shot!

Ok - I know this is a huge long shot but never noticed we had a folk thread on here... I was in an antique shop in Kendal whilst on holiday in the Lakes a few years back and as we were strolling around the shop I was listening to a song the proprietor had playing on the stereo and enjoyed it. I should have asked him what it was but instead remembered a line in the lyrics and planned to Google it later; when I did the search though it never returned any matches. Soooo, now for the long shot (given that several years have now passed too I might be misremembering this but), do any of you recall a song that contains the lyric:

"ten more years of purgatory"

Hell, I'm not even sure it was ten now!

Thanks in advance!

Been listening to some Judee Sill today after getting a recommendation from Phil Gould of all people. Lovely sutff, bit religious though...sad life story too.
