Ignore 2019 and early 2020 results. Ignore most of the current players’ performances. The majority of the current players are merely placeholders, and will be traded or ditched so there’s no point investing in them. This current incarnation of the Mariners is almost all about the prospects, and the cavalry it is a’coming. Oh my it is coming. In all the years I have been following the Mariners they have never had prospects like this. There was the triple headed pitching monster of Hultzen, Walker and Paxton, but that was about as good as it got (and pitching prospects are so volatile there is a saying known as TINSTAAPP - there’s no such thing as a pitching prospect, only Paxton made it and he was least likely to succeed, Hultzen blew out his shoulder and I don’t think ever pitched in the majors, and Walker looked like he would be good, but was traded for some more immediate help, and then blew out his elbow.

In the 2019 prospect lists the Mariners had between two and four players in the top 100 by most counts with maybe 1 in the top 50 being Justus Sheffield at around 30. Next year there will be more and they will be significantly higher ranked (apart from Sheffield who will drop a lot). Julio Rodriguez is probably going to be a top 10 prospect, maybe higher, some are saying top 3. Everyone loves Jarred Kelenic, borderline top 10 but pretty much guaranteed top 20. Evan White will be there, Justin Dunn’s taken a step forward. Logan Gilbert will be a new entry and will be somewhere between 40-60. Jake Fraley might be borderline too 100 (he got called up a couple of days ago as it happens). And there’s still Kyle Lewis, Justus Sheffield, Cal Raleigh, George Kirby, Sam Carlson and Noelvi Marte coming. If that list you’ll See most at some stage in 2020, and pretty much all of it by the end of 2021. That is a lot of talent coming and coming soon.

In recent years a Mariners list of prospects included one player anyone had heard of, a couple who might make it as a fourth outfielder, and a load of relief arms. This is very new and exciting and coming soon.

They won’t all make it, prospect flame out all the time, but then you can add the GM’a ability to pick up the odd hidden gem that no one seems to want and have them included as a throw on on a trade, the Mariner’s more recent ability of fixing player’s flaws when they develop - historically they’ve been better the other way around, the highly successful gas camp for pitchers, a ton of payroll flexibility coming, the astros juggernaut likely being significantly less juggernaughty in 2021 and the future looks oh so much more promising than it has done in years.

It doesn’t mean the Mariners will dominate, but they have a better chance of being good, and consistently good, than they have in forever (or at least 15 years).

By the end of 2021 your Mariners line up might look something like this

C - whatever / Cal Raleigh
1B - Evan White
2B - Shed Long
3B - the shell of Kyle Seager
SS - Crawford
LF - Mitch Haniger
CF - Jarred Kelenic
RF - Julio Rodriguez
DH - Vogelbach

Bench - Kyle Lewis/ Mallex Smith / Fraley

SP - Logan Gilbert
SP - Justin Dunn
SP - Kikuchi
SP - Justus Sheffield
SP - George Kirby

With some in reserve, and whatever free agents they add.

We are actually doing alright at the moment too. Austin Nola has slotted in well and Kyle Seager has been on absolute fire lately.

The return of Kyle Seager to 2017 Kyle Seager is certainly a relief (if it sticks). The days of 2013-2016 Kyle Seager are probably long gone, but he doesn’t look like the contract albatross he did this time last year. He’s been more effective about dealing with the shift which was killing him before, and there appears to be something more about that than just dumb luck, which is encouraging. This is nice as Vogelbach is rapidly turning back into a pumpkin.

Austin Nola is the very definition of what I was saying about placeholders.

In short the mariners are going through a mini-tank. They had a crack at winning in 17 and 18 and it didn’t go all that well (17 was derailed by injuries and they missed out by a game in 2018 but a lot of the performance was not likely to be repeated) so at the end of 2018 they were left with and old, expensive team and the worst fame system in baseball by some distance.

So they’ve taken a few years off from trying to win to get rid of some of the contracts, and get some young talent in. They’ve done better than most people thought they would in that regard, because they didn’t try to fully tank.

I was going to say. We seem to have won a bloody lot lately for a team trying to tank.

Was just posting Kurt Suzuki is starting to look like a typical stout Catcher. Which doesn't make sense. After Pitcher, it's the most physically active position in the game. Then he immediately gets nailed.

As a LA Dodgers disliker, that was a pleasant surprise to wake up to this morning.

Went to bed with them 3-1 up and didn't give it a second thought. (Lost 7-3 after extra innings)

Oh well, the glory hunting fans can go back into the closet for another year...

Walking in an Astros wonderland! 3-1 now, Yankees have to beat both of Cole and Verlander now. What with Palace top 6 and Bromley having been top non league dog, albeit briefly, this is as "sporting nirvana" as it will probably ever get for me. Cue losing the next 3 in the ALCS. Bit tired with these night games, even if I don't watch I keep waking up wondering what's going on and checking the score. Dreaming the score too so all very confusing.

The Professional Baseball Agreement (PBA) between Major League Baseball and minor league teams expires at the end of the 2020 season. But if a new MLB proposal were to become reality, more than three dozen cities with affiliated minor league teams will lose those teams a year from now and thousands of minor league players will be out of work as well.

The MLB proposal is just one idea at the start of what will likely be a lengthy negotiation, but the two sides are further apart than they have been in any PBA negotiation since 1990. At the core of the negotiations, MLB is looking to dramatically improve Minor League Baseball’s stadium facilities as well as take control over how the minor leagues are organized as far as affiliations and the geography of leagues. Those areas have been under the control of MiLB for the past 100-plus years and would lead to a dramatic restructuring of how MiLB is governed and operates.

MLB has offered a proposal that, if adopted, would reduce Minor League Baseball from 160 teams—not counting the complex league teams that are wholly MLB-owned—to 120 beginning in 2021.
