The Clash are one of my favourite bands, I was a little too young to have seen them live (other than the final tour for Cut the Crap but I decided that wasn't really The Clash and didn't go along). I have been to several gigs of the various members post-Clash bands (saw B.A.D. in the eighties and last year, Havana 3am and seen Joe perform with both the Pogues and the Mescaleros).

I think the individual band members post Clash music was more experimental than the stuff they did with the Clash but think that as The Clash they were greater than the sum of their parts.

I thought some of Strummer's solo stuff and with the Mescaleros was great.

Saw them in Edinburgh a month before he died.

My mate commented how well he looked

I also loved the Mesclaleros, thought they brought out three great albums, albeit the third one was never fully finished unfortunately

The First LP was great...then I had to wait 7 years for the next best song..This is England!

Once I heard the song below and the Clash went off to become Pop stars in the USA, they were no better than ...well U2.

They said that we were trash,
Well the name is Crass, not Clash.
They can stuff their punk credentials
Cause it's them that take the cash.
They won't change nothing with their fashionable talk,
All their RAR badges and their protest walk,
Thousands of white men standing in a park,
Objecting to racism's like a candle in the dark.
Black man's got his problems and his way to deal with it,
So don't fool yourself you're helping with your white liberal shit.
If you care to take a closer look at the way things really stand,
You'd see we're all just nxxxxs to the rulers of this land.

but as I have aged I do listen to them but just as background music.

I have put the old tin hat on.

No need for a tin hit , however as good as those lyrics are, as a statement which has a ring of truth about them, it is simplicist and ignores how important it was for 'white men standing in the park' to express their political views.

Any musical movement , with political intent, could be seen as a waste of time, years later. However that ignores those influenced by it, carry around the sentiments expressed years later, just in a watered down state.

I am guesssing the Park referred to, is Victoria, and I was there. I aint considered white, but it was certainly influential to me.

More Clash trivia. I saw one of the Clash members (a long time ago + memory playing tricks on me again) in a very low-key concert in Nyons (South of France) with some mates of his in the late 80s/early 90s. Can anyone shed any light on that?

Just put the Clash on the old record player.

Hmm Can I just say White man in Hammermith Palais is one of the best songs I have ever composed!!

But as a young punk rocker at the time I did feel let down with the USA stuff and sandanister WTF was that all about??

kabbolt, I think paul Simonon in a band called Havana 3AM? that toured quite a bit. Not unless you are talking about BAD? and to be honest there better forgotton!

Ever composed?

I never ever bought or even listened to Sandinista in its entirety. Mainly dire, though 'Police on my back' which I think is on it, I love.

I am probably like you, preferred the rawness of their early stuff (basically first album and some on the maligned second album).

Their two best songs, IMHO, White Man in Hamm... and Complete Control never appeared on any British released album (ignoring compilations and imports)
