So now the government wants to interfere with programming.

Not content to force schools into acadamies against their will, destroy the NHS and our local services, they are now hell bent on destroying the best broadcasting and entertainment service in the world.

This and trying to sell Channel4 is disgraceful. We have excellent terrestrial TV is the country, better than almost anywhere. Shouldn't we be looking to make it even better, stronger, rather than making it shit?

One thing less widely reported than it should have been is serious flaws in the consultations to only get views supporting his ideas. The Radio Times carried a survey for readers to contribute to the consultation and gathered well over 3000 responses which it submitted to the Minister on an encrypted memory stick. The Ministry published the consultation views, claimed to have taken into account all submissions including the RT readers, but never requested the code to access the memory stick - their excuse? The RT questions were worded slightly differently so they were not valid.

The low level of coverage given to the various stories about Whittingdale recently, when they would normally trumpet it for days has been very telling about his cosy relationship with editors.

Other than a few loud minority voices all public polls show huge support (but not unqualified) for the BBC, as does the ratings it gets vs both ITV and Sky. The Mail group, ITV, Sky/Murdoch desperately want a neutered BBC and there must be a serious risk Whittingdale will give it to them, and even worse, some of his governance suggestions could effectively create a pseudo state broadcaster.
Update on the Radio Times issue, it was actually 9000 consultation responses they ignored. They have now asked for the encryption key and said they will look at them, having lied before that they had looked at them and taken the views into account.

The sale of Channel 4 is odd. There isn't time , or the political capital available, to change it's remit - requires legislative change - to make it actually valuable in revenue generated from a sale.

So why sell it?

After the TV industry as a whole rode to the defence of the BBC vs Whippingdale last night - I wonder where the Sun stands on this? Ah - right behind Mr Murdoch and Mr Dacre...

From the BBC paper review:

The paper says the awards ceremony was "hijacked" by "luvvies" to defend the BBC. In its Sun Says editorial, the paper accuses "well-fed luvvies" for wanting their "meal ticket preserved" saying they should not "obscure the need to get a grip on the BBC's out-of-control website and dodgy scheduling".

It's disgraceful, but expected.

What's more surprising is the number of people on the left joining in with Murdoch's BBC bashing. Apparently BBC is ruthlessly biased against Corbyn's labour.

Just like it was against Blair's labour; against centre-right Tories and the right-right Tories; against the SNP and UKIP; against the Lib Dems and the greens.

Biased against everyone the BBC. Clearly it needs to be replaced with Sky.

I guess by 'out of control website' they mean hugely popular and a go-to website for people all around the world?

And the 'dodgy scheduling' is having the audacity to put on a popular programme in the Saturday night viewing peak.....how dare they!

I'd really like the BBC to stop compromising with this govt and come out fighting. I'm not a militant person at all, but there comes a point when the govt meddling is chipping away to such an extent that it's vindictive.

The public are also spun such lies, especially by the Murdoch media. Too many don't realise how Sky benefits from a weakened BBC that can't afford to produce or buy what it could, thus leaving the field open to Sky to charge for it.

A bit like the NHS etc I feel it's needed streamlining i.e. stop wasting money but seems it has gone too far with things like giving up the F1 racing so early. Yet the attacks on it and the attempted sale of C4 is a disgrace, surely let the public decide its ultimate fate not those who didn't like they way it reported on them during the election.

I can't believe that no one has realised that the Tory strategy is to threaten to do something drastic then appear to back down and dilute.
They know that the knives are out for every Tory government from the same old suspects, particularly with a narrow majority, so they play the game.

You do realise that things like giving up sports rights were a direct result of the financial fast one the Tories pulled by making the BBC cover the costs of free TV licences to pensioners? While there have been efficiencies to be made as in all large corporations, a great deal of the financial pressure has been directly created by the coalition and the current government. Javid and Whiitingdale, the main past two Culture Secs are both highly anti BBC and pro Murdoch & Co.

In the middle of a transaction so haven't had a chance to read the white paper, but I get the feeling from the headlines is it could have been an awful lot worse.

I suppose what will be interesting is whether the fact it isn't that bad (if it isn't) was Whittingdale's choice (and he essentially leaked a load of ridiculous stories to get people to accept this easily) or whether he has in fact been slapped down by someone else.

The BBC press office and PR department is superb and has a well honed attack strategy about as drilled as Pulis's two banks of four defensive cover. Any criticism of the BBC by any politician will be portrayed as an attack on democracy and will destroy the independence of the above criticism BBC. Don't reform and just carry on forever with a regressive tax system that pays Capita to hound single parents and those down on their luck.

It could have been, but the fear and doom leaking strategy makes it look decent. However, the appointment process for the board is still a huge issue. The only person who seems to think a government appointed majority on the strategy and control of content board is the way forward is Whittingdale. That part will run and run. There is also, apparently, some devil in the detail regarding distinctiveness and OFCOMs role is monitoring it. The government is aiming for a big role in defining distinction in programming. Hence the Mail and like minded press going on about the demise of Casualty, Bargain Hunt etc.

A great point made on the news last night. Whiitingdale (and many before him of both political colours, Wilson hated the BBC) considers he should have editorial and content oversight on the BBC as they are funded by his government. Actually, they are funded by us, so we, the consumers should have oversight, not the people elected by around 25% of the consumers last year.

As for the licence fee, the large majority of the population still feels it is value. Rather amazingly I heard an anti BBC guy on R5 yesterday (side issue, would Dacre or Murdoch allow their opponents equality of air time??) calling the licence a "huge" bill. Clearly he feels anywhere from 40 to 100 per month for Sky is good value.

The board appointment process remains of concern, as the numbers involved smacks of potential state control.

It's surprising any govt would push for this, because it also leaves the door open for their opposition to do the same if/when they're elected in to govt.

The BBC has to be reformed simply because its funding model is no longer valid in this modern age. You can put forward every argument you want about the BBC and many have a real validity but the notion that a TV licence to fund the BBC is a compulsory requirement is plain daft.
