Athletics

Wot ?! No athletics thread ?!

Here's a little whimsy to start one ....

De Grasse is considered to be one of the (few) great French admirals (though not the best - that would be Suffren) - beat the Brits at the battle of Chesapeake bay, during the American war of independence. However, the Brits were without their best admiral George Rodney on that day.
Rodney rejoined the campaign and beat the French, capturing De Grasse, and sending him to London, where he helped negotiate the treaty of Paris to end hostilities.

In the latest Golden League meeting, there were three Canadians in the 200m, including Rodney and De Grasse. This time De Grasse won the race by a streak, Rodney didn't place. Looks a talent, this latest De Grasse.

Potential 7000 points for Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

KJT has always been one javelin through away from brilliance.
Dina AS has looked better and better and more promising every year.

I did find it amusing the BBC kept saying only six women have won Athletics World Championship gold (in front of Olympic Champion Denise Lewis) and then there have been two in two days, with outside chances for Laura Muir plus three more in 4x100m relay.

Shame people (mainly BBC) keep commenting on low crowds in Doha, whilst failing to notice the huge numbers of African support or consider how Qatar have had diamond league meetings for years and pumped huge amounts of money into the sport.

I've been enjoying the championships. Partly because time wise it is perfect for me.

I think the ‘African support’ was migrant workers bussed in to fill the stadium.

What do we think is the best women’s event for talent? I like sprinters, jumpers and heptathletes, but it’s usually the 200m for me.

Martyn Rooney struggled just a little yesterday. He ran while the Palace match was on. Anyone know if Palace were losing at the time? No way would I want to know we were losing before I ran for a World medal. With social media and windup merchants you'd be in "Likely Lads" territory trying to not hear the score.
