I was at Deepdale. We knew we had done it and the Club even gave champagne to all the fans who had travelled - which was nice for a 16 year old! It was a great night.

Thanks for the reports Tony. Interesting to compare the reporting style then with modern day reports. There was much more detail then. Perhaps this is because back then the reports really were match reports, were written for people interested in football and written by people who knew about football and attended the game.

I was at Preston, going there and back back on the same train as the team. No champagne! I'd like the club to give me my champagne any time now, with 50 years of compound interest.

Hot off the press! Looks like promotion point at Preston. See report. Just have Fulham at home and Blackburn away. Playing a couple of friendlies with Swindon, they have a star player Don Rogers. Be interesting to see how good he is!

I remember getting the train back to Coulson after home matches and then waiting at the newsagents for the evening standard to be delivered to find all the afternoon results can’t believe the changes that have happened . We now know who,s scored immediately I think I preferred the anticipation

we used to walk home after Saturday home games, about 4 miles. Arrived outside the newsagents as the Saturday results edition of the Evening News arrived, I seem to recall it was pink but not sure its an awful long time ago now.

Great memories, the anticipation of checking results same day was fantastic then. I used to also like the afternoon football special editions by the Standard and Evening News. I used to read these on the way to the ground, They were full of action pictures and player profiles for all London clubs, ideal for my scrapbook.

Recall it more from when I used to go watch Charlton (don't ask), but leaving the ground there would be a guy selling papers shouting out, "Arf times, free firties"! Don't ever recall this at Palace.

Paper had half time scores and reports and results of the 3:30 horse races.

Coming home from Palace games they would have the full time additions by the time we got back to Bromley South.

And yes, I to seem to recall a pink edition, but think it might have been a lunch time pre-game copy.

After a bit of Googling, I think the pink or green papers might have been from 'up north.

To view the link you have to Register or Login

Quote:
Manchester Evening News "Football Green" and "Football Pink"

For years the paper was famous for its "Football Green" edition. After the MEN merged with the rival Manchester Evening Chronicle in the 1960s, its more popular "Sporting Pink" was adopted as the "Football Pink". The "Football Pink" was first issued in 1904 as part of the Manchester Evening Chronicle, which was owned by Manchester City chairman Sir Edward Hulton, 1st Baronet.

The "Green" and "Pink" names came from being printed in paper of those colours. In the 1970s the Saturday sports paper began using white newsprint, which had become by then the industry standard. The papers were printed in mobile presses inside newspaper vans usually parked near the stadiums. Actually, the Green was a Summer version, with most of the content about cricket with Lancashire's games featuring throughout the season

Charlton 4 - Blackburn Rovers 0

April 15th or 16th 1969

Cannot recall the exact date, but it was the midweek before we played Fulham on the
19th I am guessing 50 years ago today the Wednesday as back then Wednesday seemed to be the normal midweek match day (maybe because the shops used to close Wednesday afternoons)

I had to get up very early for work the next morning and went to bed before the results were on news at 10. My Dad kindly left a note next to my alarm clock with the result written in big letters CHARLTON 4 BLACKBURN O EEK !

He always was a panic merchant especially where Palace were concerned.

Never the less a relaxed build up to the Fulham game was now out of the window. It was a stretch but if we lost our last two games after 14 unbeaten home to Fulham and away to Blackburn and Charlton won their last game at home to Middlesborough who we all convinced ourselves would be no opposition as they would be deflated by just missing out on promotion, then we would miss out on goal average !

Of course we could not lose our last home game to already relegated Fulham COULD WE !!!!

Suddenly Saturday may not be the big promotion party we were all looking forward to

Percy, you are right - there was just enough 'Oldham' in that Charlton result to make us a tad uncertain going into the game against Fulham. And going two down by half-time.... well, I'm getting ahead of history here. That must wait for a few days.

Incidentally, there is one anachronism in your last post. I wonder if anyone else can spot it?

Having been to Preston, I had to miss the Fulham game (can’t remember why now). One of the biggest regrets of my Palace supporting life. Didn’t Johnny Byrne set up both Fulham goals in the first half?
