The amount of times he leaves his winger in 5-10 yards of open space for a cross field pass is ridiculous.

How often is Townsend left that wide open?

Showing Knockaert onto his stronger foot is schoolboy defending.

Problem is Soare is broken, and Jeff isn't a defender, so I'm not sure what the alternative is? Maybe Ward there for the rest of the season?
I would assume that the U23's have a left back? Maybe another AWB if we are lucky.

On Friday PVA tweeted, '' GAME DAY........ show them no quarter make Selhurst Park a fortress.

FFS he capitulated yesterday like the Dutch in 1940. No disrespect to the Dutch. FFS in was BHA not the Nazi Blitzkrieg.

He talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk.

He was one of many players tweeting this sort of bollocks. Not heard a peep out of them since mind. They really need to turn up next week and produce a performance.

As for PVA, to his credit he was excellent second half of last season. Interesting he has gone backwards since Schlupp was reinvented as a midfielder. Needs competition.

I donít want to hear anything from the players, they showed their hand on the pitch yesterday. Most of it is from PR agents anyway.

Surely he could have got a tackle in on Knocknuts who he didn't pressure at all. Ward on the left next week thanks.

He just let him get it onto his left and made no attempt to close him down. Like Townsend, Knockaert has one trick and thatís to cut back on his left. PvA had to show him on his right. But PvA canít defend. We need a more reliable defender at left back.

He was terrible in the second half. Lazy & disinterested. Offered no forward runs or options and was laboured getting back when we coughed up possession.

There is no doubting PVA has been in poor form for quite some time and defensively he is NOT the best, but who is there to replace him? the obvious choice would be Schlupp, but he is the same in that he also cant defend so its a problem that needs addressing in the summer. But for now in my opinion the only way around it is to tweek the system to 4-4-1-1 so the left sided midfielder ideally Schlupp to work closer with PVA to give that side solidity, and when it comes to attacking then they BOTH work by interchanging play down that leftside.
It's clear PVA struggles when defending and its easy to be critical but he IS the best attacking LB we as a club can afford to have, its just that with his weakness we need to work more clever as a team and cover for eachother by working as a unit.

He could and should have ushered him outside down towards to corner where he would either have had to turn or cross with his weaker foot and even if he had got the cross away there was nobody there except Dann. Instead he led him onto his good foot and across the front of goal on the edge of the box.

Absolute stupidity.

Attacks down that side break down with him more often than not at the moment.

Maybe. I can't imagine Roy trying that though. AWB only got a shout in an injury crisis.

PVA's well out of form. As it's been said already SA got the best out of him. He badly needs to get some tackling lessons off AWB.
I am sure he now runs as fast backwards as he does forwards-needed to guide Knocknuts down the wing and then tackle him not let him cut inside!
Or be nearer him in the first place so the pass wasn't an option he was just wandering around in acres of space.
Wilf and Andros not afforded that sort of luxury yesterday!

With regards to PVA , I feel he is getting way too much abuse on here ( criticism is fair enough but why abuse ? ) . He is not playing anywhere near to the high standards of last season . However watching the game again last night , he was always pushing forward to make himself available and he also played some decent forward passes . Yes some passes didn't come off but he was no worse than anyone else yesterday .
With regards to the 2nd goal , in a perfect world he could have got a bit closer , maybe fouled Knockaert or tried to force him other way . However Knockaert was running at pace , doing his tricks and was just better than PVA on that occasion . If it was Wilf doing that we would say what a fantastic goal , not that the defender was crap . Is PVA perfect ? no way . Could Palace get a better natural left full back with attacking flair but limitations defensively , unlikely . My other issue is that PVA gets hardly any cover from midfield whereas AWB is always helped out by Townsend and McArthur . I doubt many on here will agree as it does seem a player is either great or a waste of space .

Probably been said but showing the Brighton winger on to his strong left foot is such bad defending. School boy stuff and I would drop him.

I agree. Whether a player is great or a waste of space depends also on the result. It's the same on the regrettable "Hodgson Out" thread. After a bad result - and yesterday was a bad result, against arguably our biggest rivals who are fundamentally crap - the same people grind their axes about how Roy should be replaced immediately. (They are silent after we win, of course.) The question for all the "sack X now" merchants is, who do you replace them with to improve things? If you can't answer that question, maybe better to keep quiet until you can.
