This is way over the top comments about PVA like not caring etc etc, yes i accept defending is not his strongest point and i have said that many times myself, but we know what his strengths are and he is one of the best LB's when attacking so maybe we need to focus on that instead.
Surely one way around this issue and help to overcome it which will also benefit Palace defensively, is to have the Left sided Midfielder currently(Schlupp)work more closely in conjunction with PVA by dropping back thus offering greater cover when PVA surges forward. This system worked superbly that some older fans may remember when Jim Cannon at Centre Back would go on his surging runs and to plug the gap left Peter Nicholas from midfield would slot into the "hole" vacated to cover any gaps left, it worked perfectly then and that is what needs doing now. |

On Saturday there were a number of times Wilf ignored his overlapping runs. Particularly at home when sides are deep against us, his overlaps are one of our most dangerous weapons - Wilf was the one who constantly refused to use that. His defending wasn't good but we also didn't utilise the qualities he can bring to the team. He should still have done better on the 2nd goal though.
We know he isn't the best defender so if he we don't utilise his attacking strengths then we really won't perform as well as we should. Last edited by Eddie McGoldrick's tash; 11-03-2019 at 10:19 AM. |

We would see a different PVA if there was proper competition for his place at left-back. |

Got screwed all the time by schlupp at the beginning. 2v1
Led to errors Now his confidence has been destroyed. He looks scared of the ball, fears the groans Schlupp has improved, even a little defensively but Pva is a shell of the player he was. Obviously has the ability but nervous under pressure and rushes to get rid of the ball. All in his head but he’s a shadow of his ability

That's just a poor excuse. He was in a great position a couple of times. Just because PVA had messed up some passes it doesn't mean Wilf shouldn't play him in again.

I really can't be doing with, certainly in respect of clubs of our ilk, defenders who's number one attribute in the role isn't defending. Then again I greatly respect Sam and Roy who I would have thought would think similarly. Hands up , I don't understand. I'd rather a defender there and some extra airy fairiness in other areas, away from our goal. Maybe without PVA you could afford Meyer mincing about in the middle a bit?

the way i see it. If it was the other side, we'd drop AWB for Ward, but we don't have the luxury on the left side

Think his biggest problem is that he gets too square-on to a forward so that he is beaten by a fast runner. He clearly should have forced Knockeart onto his weaker right foot and made him go down the line when he was isolated from other defenders. If needed he could then foul him to stop the attack. Once he let him come inside he couldn't foul him without risking a red card. After the goal he simply shrugged at VG as if to say 'What could I do?'
I remember Kenny Sansom saying that Terry Venables taught him to always be partly side-on when defending against a winger so that you could turn quickly and make a second challenge.

He defends by getting back in shape. Isolate him one on one, or catch him up the pitch and he is beyond useless. Zero physically strength and no strength in a tackle which is where AWB makes up for it. He defends by passing attackers either inside to centre backs or Luka. When they aren't their, goals like Knockhart happen. Would like to see Ward in for him on Saturday

I don't usually criticise individual players, but I think he is an adequate defender and can be very good going forward. However, he is in dire form (or his head is all wrong), and losing Sakho has really shown him up (isn't Sakho our only left sided CB ?). I hope RH and RL can find a way to tighten up our left side. They may not realise that Joel Ward has done a decent stand-in job on the left, in the past. |

Been saying it for months and months and was getting slated for it as his attacking qualities were covering up defensive mistakes - but now he isnt even doing much going forward. I think he is a good wing back but a poor defender.
Couldnt do worse than try for Ryan Sessegnon

PVA is at his best in our best back four with our captain shielding them. Everyone has a poor patch at some stage including very reliable players who then get ripped apart. Palace are at their best when we play as a team and that is when we win. He will come good again as will Townsend, etc. Get behind whoever plays
