Duke Ellington could put a band together, back in the day, as well. As could Benny Goodman, in case it came off that I was suggesting black musicians are always intrinsically better at playing music - I was just pointing out that only white rock bands were under consideration.
EW&F are a great example - if we were going to refine it further by limiting to blood relations, how about the Isley Brothers?

Derek and the Dominoes had both Eric Clapton and Duane Allman in it. The others could have been totally inept and not overcome that level of natural talent.

I don't think that Allman was an "official" member of D & the Dominos (and despite being a white southerner, wasn't as racist as Mr Clapton).

Musically, then surely look no further than Pink Floyd, followed by E.L.O who brought Classic combined it with Rock, you cant get more diverse than that. Brilliant.

Toto. Barely a hit album of the 80ís didnít feature at least one of them. Steve Lukather was Michael Jacksons go to guitarist, the opening riff to Beat It was Lukatherís idea. David Paich was keyboard man extraordinary, wrote dozens of songs for others most notably Steely Dan. The Porcaro brothers were legendary drummer and bass playing with anybody who was anybody. Bobby Kimball was main singer, right up until he tried to sell cocaine to an undercover cop
As a band they enjoyed great success, still playing in various guises, but as solo session musicians they were probably the most proficient and employed group ever.

When I clicked on the thread title my first thought was also Pink Floyd.

Not only for their musicianship but also how they used other sound recordings, from the cash register in ‘Money’ to Churchill.

We're not talking about your favourite bands, but most musically gifted. Jeez, this is going the way of the Guilty Fancies thread. I nominate Duran Duran. Or maybe the Rollers.

I saw The Eagles at Twickenham a few years back, wasnít impressed. Even Glenn Frey said that they were once accused of loitering on stage, absolutely no crowd interaction at all. I said to my missus then that I could have stayed at home and listened to the album, every note and word were identical. They were supported by The Dixie Chicks who were wonderful.
