There have been a few underwhelming live shows by Zep, I wasn't that impressed with the ever popular Song Remains the Same footage either tbh but I guess it's different if you were there and they were of your generation. The very early stuff seems to be the best though, before they were too pissed, high and the voice lost a bit of umph. There's a brilliant live set on youtube which I remembered being in The Isle of White and maybe one of their birthdays, but alas can't find it. Just for the fun of it, here's Bonzo doing his thing...

The Song Remains The Same isn’t great viewing.
The DVD released in 2003 is entirely a different matter. Just brilliant live performances.
Their performance at Earl’s Court in 1975 was superb.
Still think they were the best and most exciting band. Technical excellence.

Not many mentions for bands from the punk/New Wave era, which I guess is unsurprising. However, I give you Magazine.
The Stranglers were/are a very gifted band. JJ Burnel a fantastic bassist and Dave Greenfield is a genius on the keyboards with many keyboard runs played usually with one hand. Hugh Cornwell although not up there with the best was a very innovative and quirky guitarist. Jet Black again not with the best but a very good drummer

Magazine is another very good call. Barry Adamson is making intriguing records to this day. Also, I’m no Nick Cave fan but the Bad Seeds have some killer musicians.

Pink Floyd were just as good live if not better than when they were in studio. Listen to that video, David Gilmour and Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason at their very best! Speechless!

Good call, Norman Watt-Roy is probably the best bassist that I have seen live, alongside Charlie Charles, Chaz Jankel, Davey Payne and Wilko Johnson. Some very talented musicians there.

If you like the technical and theory aspects of music then have a look at Rick Beato’s ‘what makes this song great’. It’s really good and covers some classic tunes.

They were great, but dunno if session musicians count? (If they do, then we'd also need to include the likes of The Swampers, The Wrecking Crew, The Compass Point All Stars &c.)

Don't know. But a musician is a musician good or bad. There are a number of famous ones who did session stuff Glen Campbell and Andy Fairweather Low are two who spring to mind.

One musically gifted band are The Doors.

Excluding Jim Morrison as singer, all three musicians feature in most "greatest of all time" lists for their respective instruments.

I love those first two or three albums but I'm not convinced they were particularly great players (apart from Thompson who was/is a superb drummer). Mackay and Manzanera were both pretty primitive early on. Part of Marquee Moon's (the song) appeal for me is that it sounds touch and go if Television are going to be able to deliver it, but they do! Maybe that's just the production though because having seen them a couple of years ago, Tom Verlaine is a wonderful player.
Kokomo might be the best group of musicians I've seen.

This is slightly left-field one but I’ve been listening to Minutemen a fair amount recently.

They make a hell of a racket for a three piece and were all seriously good and inventive musicians – especially Mike Watt who was and still is a ridiculously good bass player.

It’s all the more remarkable considering they came out of the early 80s West Coast Punk/Hardcore movement where giving the appearance of not being able to play properly was pretty much a badge of honour.

Example…

Eno (whose solo albums I love) wasn't much of a musician either.

I love some of his stuff, especially that with Fripp, but there's always been a bit of a whiff of the Emperor's new clothes about him. There's a few German pioneers who complain that he nicked stuff wholesale from them, and Richard Lloyd of Television was less than enthralled by him when he was brought in to produce their demos. He put them off ever having a producer again.
