Well that’s Season 5 over. Wholly disappointing ultimately, although the suspense in the final episode was nicely done.

Not sure mixing real historical figures with fictional characters actually works in this type of drama though. For a kick off, you knew Mosley wouldn’t be shot. But I think what’s left a bad taste in my mouth with the writers is that you feel instead of trying to tell a good story with well rounded characters they’re more intent on virtue signalling - force feeding you their student level political points by depicting a cartoonish evil fascist in Mosley. ‘Look everybody - this man is a right wing evil Nazi and good old bad boy but loveable left leaning Tommy will save us from these fascist bastards.’ Throw in more than a few anti Jewish chants and you’ve nailed it. I’m surprised they didn’t go the whole hog and ship good ole Tommy to Germany in an attempt to whip off Adolf’s remaining testical and kill him.

Not defending Mosley as a man or politician, but I really hate it when they make heavy handed political statements in dramas like these. It reduces it to a level of a kids cartoon where the ‘goodies and the baddies’ are obviously defined. Mosley = Dick Dastardly in Wacky Races. Life and people are just not like that.

And anyway, would someone like Tommy have really had the foresight at that point in history to cast Mosley as ‘the devil’, and know exactly what he was aligning himself with? Maybe being gypsy he did possess the gift of foresight and had already seen WW2 played out in his head to conclusion?

Anyway, away from the politics, the whole series has been a huge disappointment as it’s become a pastiche of itself. Unfortunately, its success has made the writers and makers become far too self aware.

It's a burger that they dropped the theme tune from the start.

I enjoy it. Arthur should have died though many times over. I also don't remember Polly turning sane again after she went all mystical. It just happened.

Also sad to see Littlefinger go.

This politicisation of this series borrowed far too heavily from the latter stages of "When the Boat Comes In" It was a virtual remake at times, Pet.

A decent ending to a very average series. I would have rather Arthur was killed and Aberama was retained. Exploring the gypsies and their lives in 1930s Britain would have been far more interesting and novel than the route they are going.

I agree totally. I rather think they have jumped the shark, and turned a great, different programme into another Downtonny historical cliche.

It was rather if The Sopranos had ended with Tony meeting JFK. Uncredible and unnecessary.

Good final episode to the worst series yet. Too arty, too political, just stick to the gang violence and we'll all be happy.

Just finished the series. Fooking excellent throughout.

Could tell there’s a shift to BBC1 viewers, so there was a bit of a glamorisation toward the slow mo / pastiche of the original series but if you know about the real Mosley they got it spot on.

Nice ending as it’s unclear who pulled the plug on the assassination.

Was it Michael’s “plan b” ?

Polly resigned ... was she involved ?

The obvious connection is Finn, and how he let the cat out of the bag.

Was it Alfie Soloman ?

Aberama had a look in his eye....

Overall, an excellent series, if a little dumbed down for BBC1 viewers

Know what you mean... but realistically, how far could someone like Tommy Shelby go with just owning the racecourses and having protection from the police ?

The real power is in politics. Ultimately, that’s where he has to go.

As it said in the final episode... Grandma born in a tent, mother born in a narrowboat, Thomas born in a house and his kid born in a mansion.

Enjoyed the whole thing. Thought Mosley’s character was quality. He did some great speeches.
Fags & whiskey at every turn.
Who organized the do over? Michael, his wife or the Irish guy who they bullied into bribing the refs?

Oh yeah, reading above, great to see Alfie Solomon again. Makes me want to look at Tom Hardy’s previous movies.

Reading a bit about Mosley’s life and saw that he got married before the war at Goebbels residence in Berlin. Apparently guest of honour at the wedding was none other than Mr Hitler himself. Which made me think, I’d be surprised the way the series is going, if the makers didn’t feature a little meeting between Tommy and Adolf. It’s nailed on isn’t it?

I take it they didn't even mention that Mosley was a war hero, and a whistleblower against Black and Tan atrocities in Ireland?

No, he’s not. He’s pointing out that evil people are not always evil all of the time. It was barely a complex point; do keep up.
