Press scum

No hyperbole in the title.

It’s almost like the Leverson inquiry didn’t happen.

This week we’ve seen the scummy Sun headline the horrific and tragic murders in Ben Stoke’s family’s history, and it seems Gareth Thomas was blackmailed by a journalist and had to reveal that he had HIV. The scumbags actually told his parents before he could discuss it with them properly.

Firstly, why people continue to buy The Sun God only knows, and secondly, shouldn’t Gareth Thomas release the name/s of the blackmailers so the public can intrude on their private lives?

Can’t believe people would stoop that low and what’s more, allowed to get away with it.

Then we have the Guardian having a poke at David Caeron about the death of his disabled 6 year old son. Not sure how low you can get. Even if you disagree with their politics or how wealthy someone is using their kids to attck them is completely wrong.

The News of the world was abolished for getting at a family through their dead child . That stunk and this does too

That comment in the Guardian was poor taste (and they have apologised), but are you seriously comparing it to hacking a dead girl’s phone?

Camerons (deceased) child was profoundly disabled and the Guardians comment was to suggest that because the Camerons are rich it somehow mattered less to them. What would you do for a political point. I wiould settle for that journalist and those who signed off on the article being firedrather than abolishing the whole rag but I doubt that will happen

It worries me that as a nation we seem to tolerate these acts. Yes, there’s condemnation but little action. Putting our faux tribal hatred of ‘Scousers’ to one side, I can only admire them that so many boycotted The Sun after the disgusting lies they spread about Hillsborough. Why did the rest of the country not come out in support with them?

Some of the utter tripe I see on the front pages of the like of that paper, The Mail, Express and Telegraph recently is actually very concerning when you look at the absolute mess we are in as a country. You only have to listen to talk radio stations or read these boards to realise some fall for their malicious and prejudice bulls*it hook line and sinker.

Like nearly all national newspapers The Sun has seen it's sales circulation fall by more then half, from over 3 million to less then 1.5 million sales on average per day, over the last 10 years. The newspaper is a slowly dying media with an ageing readership, only a few publications are likely to survive long term in a dwindling market.

They are becoming increasingly desperate for publicity to sell their newspapers and also to pander to their readership bias and misconceptions so scrummy journalism is likely increase in the next few years then decrease in an increasingly divided society.

The Guardian apologised the same day.

How long did it take the Sun to apologise for Hillsborough, Milly Dowler etc? Did you take such umbrage at the Mail's hatchet job on father Milliband? For which they haven't apologised but have sought to justify.

The Sun is a piece of crap for publishing that horrible article. That's why I never read it.

However the other press aren't much better. I didn't even know the Sun/Stokes article even existed or it's content until other news siurces such as the BBC made such a big deal about it and alluding to the general content of the original article.

Ben Stokes made a point of not referencing the story in his statement, yet other news websites writing about his statement talked about the story and what happened.

It was Ben Stokes who made a big deal of it.

True, but he made a point of not talking about the content of the crap the Sun published. Why did they feel the need to publish a story from before he was even born?

Let me clarify:

He made a big deal of the Sun’s abysmal “journalism”.

And rightly so.

To blame other media outlets for reporting his statement is ridiculous.

Can’t say I agree with you on this.

Stokes made an excellent statement, but he must have known that by doing that he would also shine a wider light on the events in that story. It is an obvious consequence of speaking out against a national paper so strongly. He must have felt that the story was now out there, so he wanted to speak out largely for his mum’s sake.

I heard it mentioned on BBC radio news, but the presenter only said that the event happened before Ben was born...which I think was reasonable because she had to give the story some context. She didn’t say what the event was.

The Sun is to blame, but I also think the New Zealand relative who spoke to the paper needs to take a look at herself too. The story would have been weaker without her quotes and family knowledge of that time.

I agree that the public have the power to break The Sun and we could do this with ease by simply not buying it. Its days must be numbered, as increasingly people will get their sports stories and scandal from the internet. It offers nothing else.

No problems with other media outlets reporting his statement but some also reported the content of the original story which is what I have a problem with.

No difference between them at a basic level, as The Two Ronnies have pointed out.

Maybe but when you look at the digital figures you’ll see the likes of the sun are read by 30 odd million uk adults a month - way more than you ever got in the print newspaper.

Arguably the influence of news titles is at its peak at the moment.
