We lost our holiday in the early 70s when Clarksons travel collapsed. Got the money back a few months later. The stock market fell hugely for two days.

At the risk of asking a potentially stupid question, why is a £600m taxpayer repatriation better value than a £200m taxpayer financial rescue? I'm guessing state-aid rules may be playing a part, but still.

The 250 was a short term fix. Total debts are around 1.7billion, so significant further investment was actually needed.

Some of our very best holidays have been camping ones in France when the kids were young. Fantastic times.

It really isnít a hassle booking separate nowadays though. Took 20 mins this year when we went to Portugal (we have done it before mind so knew the flights and apartments we wanted) Flights via Skyscanner, apartment via Booking.com, transfers via Yellowfish. Even when we had to change my eldest daughters flight to the following day, it was a 5 min phone call and that was Ryanair!

Just canít see why Iíd ever book a package in Europe to be honest
Yep, been arranging our own holidays for years.

On the repatriation expense : is it really going to cost £4k per person to get them home? (600m for 150k people).

Transport Secretary is predicting the repatriation will cost about £100m, based on the Monarch one costing £50m.

I feel very sorry for the staff. Most will be on shit pay, and I imagine it's doubtful that they will even end up with any wages they're owed.

Because the gov said it will be a short term rescue and that with the problems at TC they would likely be back in this situation soon still facing the 600m bill anyway

My godson works for Thomas Cook as a rep in the canaries he's been told they are not being paid from now and they no longer work for them so the holiday makers no longer have anyone to find out whats going on.
He and some others have decided to carry on working to help them out and no doubt face a lot of crap from people.

Tell him he should highlight that in his CV and use it as an experience to discuss in job interviews.

So that would only buy you 500 yards of ultimately useless HS2 railway track.

Better to make the investment there is no reason why Thos Cook cannot be made profitable again.
