I think this is what we should do. Bringing Townsend back didn't work out too well when we were presented with very similar selection issues, with McArthur being unavailable, at Tottenham.

Clearly? It seemed to take ages until Hodgson finally replaced Hennessey with Guaita as the number one goalkeeper.

It is very notable how much Meyer influenced our second goal on Saturday beating 3 players around him and getting the ball to Wilf to do what he did and then Townsend to score.

However, expecting normal turgid midfield
I think ‘beating three players around him’ might be a slight over-exaggeration but the reverse pass was indeed good.

Luka has not played well TBH, though I thought vs Norwich he was better. I'd make Cahill captain, and as we need to keep it tight and avoid passing it to the opposition, I'd drop Schlupp but that will never happen.

I'd like to see Jimmy Mac, McCarthy, Meyer and Kouyate in midfield, defence and GK pick themselves atm, and I'd have Wilf and Ayew up front, with Wilf being more right wing than front two. I still don't think Andros is doing enough to be picked, but would bring him on if needed.

Kelly deserves to keep his place and Townsend deserves to start.
Fancy the XI named will be it.

Think we need Schlupp and Townsend supporting PVA and Ward defensively as otherwise I fear Anderson and Yarmolenko will exploit us.

We need PVA & CB pairing to be fully aware that Yarmolenko either cuts in and shoots with his left foot, or cuts in, dummies shooting with his left, before shooting with his left foot..

No he beat 3 players!!!!

Not sure why all the fuss though. Guaita beat 8 with one goal kick

Isn't this Hodgson's favourite thing all a bit school playground? Do you seriously think he has had his length of career and is still managing a PL team at his age, based on who he likes best rathber than who is the best player for the task? ? Bearing in mind what he has achieved here so far, his decisions would appear to be justified.

I reckon both Schlupp and Roy deserve a bit more respect for what they do/have done.

Well said Martin. Schlupp is often referred to as Roy's love child. He's no world beater but he has played a key role/assisted in three goals this season.

Schlupp is the closest thing to a penetrative, attacking midfielder that we have. He was poor last week but is probably about the third most likely player to create or score a goal on any given day. The fact that the club has done nothing in seven seasons to secure a better version of him while chucking insane sums at defenders, wingers and strikers is hardly Schlupp's fault and neither is the regimented style of play we use that actually inhibits Schlupp's primary weapon -his pace. I think he's be a decent forward / striker partner option but Roy clearly believes we need his running in an otherwise uninspiring, pedestrian midfield. He won us so many points over the last twelve months that the bashing he gets here is ridiculous.

Anyone dropping Ayew needs their head checked. Our most consistent performer all season. Townsend showed also at the moment why he should be used as an effective sub for the last 30 minutes of game. He can shoot from distance and also has the ability to carry the ball away from danger in the 2nd half.

What he doesnt have or hasnt shown enough is when starting a game at 0-0 he has the skill or consistency to break down defences in the 1st half of games.

Vinny

Ward Kelly Cahill PVA

McArthur Macarthy Kouyate Schlupp

Zaha Ayew

I think replacing Luka with Andros will weaken our midfield, and is too attacking a change for Roy, so I think he'll play it safe and give the other Jimmy Mac his first start.

I think this will/should be the starting line up, either as 4-4-2 as you've shown, or 4-3-3 with Schlupp further forward.

Same as Brighton Eagle, though I wonder if Roy thinks McCarthy is fit to start yet - he hasn't played many minutes.

————-jimmy———-McCarthy——-kouyate———-

Subs: Wayne, kelly, Meyer, Camarasa, schlupp, benteke, a.n.other

Harsh on kelly who probably will and tbf probably should start. He’s done so well this season but tomkins is bloody brilliant and has been fit for 3 weeks now. Like to see him get an hour if he truly is up to speed fitness wise because we will need him fit a raring to go as the fixture list gets congested after these next 6 games. Happy with either though

Townsend looked his old self against Norwich and was a remarkable step up in our attacking play. He’s saying all the right things and quite honest in his own lacklustre start so be happy enough to seem him come into the side. Schlupp is also fine in a front three but not deeper.

Treat them like a top 6 side I think. They are going to come out all guns blazing as in great form. Keep it tight, frustrate, physical and hit on the break. The more they come at us the better it suits us. If we keep them out we will get chances but must take them. First goal massive as ever
