Kelly and Cahill at the moment . They are the best two to form a partnership given the injury problems of Tomkins and Sakho who shouldn't even be considered until fully fit (Be expected to play every week)

I do think though they are all competent centre backs and any combination of the 4 is as good as most and better than others

Can you give examples of how many times/games he has cost us?
Sakho cost us 2 points last season by giving away one of the most idiotic pens I can remember at Bournemouth and as good as he is, generally gives most of us heart failure a couple of times every match.

Yet to see it happen, but I think Tomkins - Cahill could be a very decent partnership.

It's heartening to know at present that we have some options in this area, and most of them are pretty good.

Consistency and reliability is the basis of a good defence. You cannot change it how they performing. Therefore Kelly and Cahill. Sakho is better than Kelly obvious but if hes going to be injured most weeks its no good to a settled defence.

The difference between Sakho, tomkins and Cahill is Sakho passing forward so well and often so quickly. We thrive on the counter attack and Sakho is absolutely key to that, especially against top sides.

Defensively their isnít much to separate them when all fit and I think we are in a great place with them all here. The only issue is fitness and the addition of Cahill has revolutionised our resilience.

Kelly too has added consistency this season. Still not on the level as the other three who are remarkably good for us but clearly ahead of Dann now.

Great options at cb though, itís fantastic.

Sakho +1, leaning towards Cahill at the moment but tomkins is great so itís not easy

It's close, because Cahill and Kelly have been good. However, if Sakho can get back to his best I think it has to be Cahill and Sakho. Aside from the defensive side of things, Sakho plays some great forward passes that can set up some of our better attacks. I think he edges it for that.

I think we have to stick with Cahill and Kelly. Kelly has done nothing to warrant losing the place. However Sakho will be wanting it back and of course Tomkins wants a piece of this action as well especially as it's Wet Spam.
Roy may have other ideas especially as Cahill may well be captain for this outing!

in order of ability:

Sakho
Cahill
Tomkins
Kelly
Dann

As someone mentioned, Kelly has done little to lose his place so Cahill and Kelly until Sakho’s backo.

Yes Cahill and Kelly did well on Saturday and deserve to keep their places in the team. There is no need to rush Sakho back if there are slight doubts over his fitness.

Will start to become a bit of a selection headache in this area going forward with good quality options available.

As you say Tomkins will also be chomping at the bit to play against his former club West Ham.

At the moment if everyone is fit I would marginally pick Cahill and Sakho as the 2. Sakho chosen for his passing ability out from the back.

This is a far tougher question than I had expected. As a result my answer attempts to stay on the fence for as long as possible

I think the 2 best individual CBs are Cahill and Sakho. With their experience, composure, defensive skills plus the way they distribute the ball, it's very difficult to argue against.

But Sakho and Tomkins are a pretty awesome pairing, Kelly with either Sakho or Cahill match it and probably offers a smidge more pace due to MK.

So..... where's that fence again?

With fitness levels questionable I would plump for Cahill and Kelly for Saturday but then I get back up on that boundary divider i reckon.

It is interesting that the two best individual players don't necessarily make the best defensive partnership.

It's hard to look beyond Sakho and Tomkins, yet would anyone seriously bench Cahill now?

Also, it's interesting that not one voter has chosen Scott Dann to even play a game now. At one stage he was our best defender by a country mile and popped up with many a goal too, which none of our central defenders seem to do these days.

The only unknown now is what Cahill would be like next to Tomkins. On paper it sounds amazing, yet still seems to lack the creativity that Sakho can bring.

It seems whatever combo you come up with sounds good and solid, which can only be a positive. I just hope we can keep this 5 together all season as I'm sure we'll need all of them at some stage.
