If they are unable to complete the season before June 30th surely the only option will be to null and void.

I think I'm right in believing that player contracts on a yearly basis run from 1 July to 30 June - there will be loads of players contracts expiring on 30 June.

Surely it won't be fair if clubs that were competing in the league a month ago suddenly find themselves 4-5 players short on what they did for the run-in.

Yes you are right player contracts run up to 30th June which will complicate matters.

Don't they get paid for another month after that anyway?

I think you could be right on that but not 100% sure. Possibly to give out of contract players another wage packet until they find a new club.

As funny as it would be if they scrapped the season re. Liverpool, they just can’t do it. Obviously contracts need extended if going into July, but I would say if this thing drags out longer, I’d be inclined to cancel next season all together just to get this one done.

Yep. I think it's more possible that next season may not occur in the way we would expect though as something will have to give. The way it is going it could be months before this could get sorted. Who knows what they will do re the contract situation, I doubt the football authorities know yet either. This is an extraordinary situation that nobody could have any plan for.

Issue is what happens if a player doesn't want to extend a contract? There's no way of binding them in to that, so clubs could still end up losing players and putting them at a disadvantage. Whatever happens, some clubs are going to be horribly disadvantaged compared to others. Whilst cancelling the whole of next season would likely lead to even more severe financial implications for clubs.

Whatever the situation, it's going to be an interesting / depressing time for a number of clubs.

Four Scots footballers have been saved from suicide by a mental health charity in the past week as the coronavirus crisis wreaks havoc.

All football below the National League to end immediately, all results expunged and no promotion or relegation.

Real shame for non-league clubs, hope the leagues above don’t follow.

Not such a shame for the ones in the relegation zone.

Decision made - Isthmian Football League
Each of the Leagues in the Non League system has just been sent a statement from the FA which outlines how the season will end. You will find the main points of this decision in the image below.

The entire statement can be read on the FA website, here.

I know they're our rivals and all, but I hope it's not too serious for him and that no-one else comes down with it.

This issue needs to be addressed, BBS contract lawyers should be advising us on this.

EDIT apparently FIFA have powers to ensure players cannot move clubs until this season has been completed

My solution: finish the season in july/august. Start next season a month later but play the premier league as 2 leagues of 10 that can be completed a lot faster. Bottom 3 of the lower league go down. Top 3 go in to the champions league. 3rd to 6th places playoff for the last champions league spot. Rest go into the europa league. 7th to 10th playoff for the final europa league spot. Enough football there to see it through til the summer.

I'd allow three to be promoted from the Championship, relegate the bottom five from the PL ( considering who is down there it would virtually guarantee to be a wonderful end for us to watch ) and play 34 matches next season. Allow seven subs per game and 30 man squads to keep player fatigue down then ask the PL teams to play with the kind of weekly intensity they do in the Championship, with plenty of midweek games.

We should be able to start next season several months later than usual and still finish the following summer. ( 2021 ) Even if the following season goes into early June 2021, we can go quickly into the Euros, especially if the powers that be are farsighted enough to schedule the tournament a little later than usual. We have to see out this season and save next season. Seeing Weed, Spam and Watford all facing the real prospect of relegation would just be the cherry.

Now you are talking, and the added beauty of that would make it impossible for all the relegated clubs to make an instant return too
