Julian will prove his real worth

I WAS sorry to see Julian Gray leave the club this week. He's a good mate of mine who I played with at Crystal Palace and Birmingham City prior to coming to Coventry.

We roomed together during the pre-season programme and for away games so it is a big disappointment to me.

But going to Fulham is a really good move for him and I wish him all the best because his career has been at a standstill over the last couple of years.

Jules is a player who comes across as a bit laid-back on the pitch and he's the type that needs an arm around the shoulder - but his ability is frightening.

Trust me, I have seen him at his best. He has got the whole package and I really hope it works out for him and that he kicks on while playing in what I believe to be the best league in the world.

SATURDAY'S defeat was disappointing, to say the least,
particularly coming days after we had played so well against Newcastle in the Cup.

Well, for the second half and extra-time at least!

One criticism that has been levelled at us in recent weeks is that we have not started too well in some games.

It's really hard to take when you train hard all week and then go on to the pitch on a Saturday and don't come out flying.

I didn't personally feel as sharp as I would have liked at Doncaster which was a surprise to me, but I don't want to use the workrate in the Cup game as an excuse. Overall, I just think we were poor on the day.

But it is still very early in the season and we will knuckle down in training during the two-week international break and hopefully bounce back in our next game at home to Preston..

OUTSIDE football my main interest is naturally enough my family.

Me and my wife have two small boys, Shay who is two and Kian who is just one year old. They are great fun and have completely changed my life for the better.

Some of the things they do often make me wonder if I was like that when I was little.

So when I am not training or playing football I like to spend as much quality time with the kids as I can, as well as with my mum and my sister.

Other than that, I haven't really got any hobbies or hidden talents, although I would describe myself as the life and soul of the party.

I play a pretty mean game of table tennis, even though I say so myself, and like to think I am all right at tennis too.

I have got a table at home and used to regularly play my teammates at Palace, although I have not challenged anyone to a game at Coventry yet.

A few of the lads fancy their chances so I will have to arrange to get them on my own patch.

I played all the usual sports as a kid, including cricket, rugby and athletics, but I was always better at football and am fortunate to have made a career at it.

But I do love cricket and enjoy watching it, although I never wanted to be a cricketer because I never fancied having my fingers whacked by a hard red ball.

I have been to watch England a few times, and did so especially when a good friend of mine, Alex Tudor, played for them.

He's a bowler who can bat and once got 99 runs not out against New Zealand, so he's a bit of an all rounder.

He was at Essex in the summer so I try to get to see him play when I can.

I only got to know him in the last 10 years or so but we grew up in the same area so have a lot in common..

MUSIC-wise, I like R'n'B, reggae and funky house.

I listen to most stuff on my ipod, although I can't stand anything like Beethoven or heavy metal rock and indie stuff - the sort of tunes that Marcus Hall and Jay Tabb listen to.

Tabby is a bit different to most of the lads with his hair and drainpipe jeans, but he's a great lad and great little player to have in the team.

As for Marcus, he's a bit too old these days and listens to stuff from before I was born, so I prefer to hang with the young lads like Dan Fox who sorts out a lot of the music in the dressing room.

I know what you mean, but Morrison always convinced with his attitude, wheareas Gray seemed to have a chip on his shoulder. Good player (Gray), who really should be doing better though.

Not according to some, matured with age and I'm sure Jules will too.

Would love 'em bother here now, but c'est la vie - we'll be saying the same about Alan Lee and Nick Carle once they've left us.
