Makes sense to me.
That's more or less true. I don't believe that that there was any realistic prospect of Cahill coming to Palace. Pity - he is a class act.

The scary thing was that he should really have had a hat-trick, not just 1 goal and 2 assists.

Cahill and Carrick and we'd have been safe in mid-table long ago. Let's hope Dowie continues to go after midfielders like that.

Would certainly want Cahill, not too sure about Carrick.

Carrick's a quality player. Doesn't do much that's really pleasing to the eye. Just does the simple thing and he does it very well.

I've never seen Carrick play well. Live on three occassions (including Cardiff last May) numerous times on telly. Got booed of the putch at Upton Park (subbed after 50 mins) when I was a guest there vs West Brom three seasons ago. One of the most overrated players around IMO.

I was watching Match of the Day last night, and I watched the Everton game, and all I could think was, what if?

2 Great assists and a goal, he was a class player last night, man of the match without a doubt. I hope Simon Jordan is kicking himself.

Don't think he would of joined us. Everton are a bigger team than us from Cahills point of view.

That is not the impression I got from Iain Dowie when I spoke with him. He was bemoaning the fact that Cahill had agreed terms and was ready to join before the agent fiasco.

I remember many years ago Bert Head belioeved he was so close to signing an England intyernational called Alan Mullery. But Mullery didn't turn up for the meeting and instead went to Fulham. If only.........

Look - if anyone wants to get into an 'if only we'd signed ????' competition there are many of us who could come up with better examples than Cahill.

The only thing that we can be sure about is that if we'd signed Cahill (or Mullery) things would be different. Not necessarily better - just different.

If at the time of the Cahill saga somebody could have said that signing Cahill would guarantee that we'd go into March 4 points clear of relegation we'd all have said 'sign him now'. We're doing better without Cahill than we would have expected to do with him. 'If onlys' prove nothing.

Carrick has been playing well for Tottenham actually. Trust me, I didnt want that to be the case. Overrated? Probably.. but he's still good.

This is my understanding of the situation too, Everton were not in the equation until later, had Jordan agreed to pay the agant's fee he would have been our player, end of. It's not just the missing out on Cahill though is it? You can't tell me that this alienating of SFX had nothing to do with Wayne refusing a new contract or every other agent under the sun clubbing together to teach Jordan a lesson in the transfer window? It's the detremental knock on effect it's had. I'm not convinced that even if we stay up that we will be able to bring in any decent additions in the summer if Jordan is still there and hasn't done some major public bridge building on the agent front

What a great signing for Palace, one of their best ever (if not the best). World-class player. Just shows once again how timing is everything and how financial fate can hinge on a key moment or two...one shit home play-off performance, Zaha wakes up after five months sleep-walking, Speroni finger-tip save onto the bar. That night changed the respective fortunes of the two clubs for a good few years, but we all suspected that even at the time.
