Shipp sails into management

WE€™VE got a new feature starting in the South London Press tomorrow which we hope will be of interest to Crystal Palace fans.
Keen to keep supplying a football fix to Eagles followers over the quieter summer months, we are speaking to former players to see what they are up to after hanging up their boots.
And kicking things off is Neil Shipperley, who last week was appointed as the new manager of Bedfont FC, who play in the Combined Counties League.
I remember speaking to Neil as part of our play-off coverage last year, as he was the man who scored the winning goal to take Palace into the Premier League in 2004, and he spoke then about his desire to have a stab at being a boss.
What is a bit of a surprise - and Neil admits it himself in the article appearing in our pages tomorrow - is just how tough it is to get an opportunity in the dugout, even if you have had an impressive and lengthy professional career.
He is actually doing the Bedfont job for free, just so that he can begin to see if management is something he wants to focus on as a full-time occupation.
There is another option if it doesn’t work out as Neil is currently doing The Knowledge, so Palace fans might get a shock if they hail his black cab in the next couple of years!
Is there anyone you would like to see us feature in Where Are They Now? Or a former Eagle who you know has an interesting job after ending their playing days?

IT’S A sign of how tough it is to get your first break as a boss that Neil Shipperley’s maiden managerial job is not paying him a penny.

The former Crystal Palace striker took charge of Bedfont FC last week. It is something of a shock that the 34-year-old - who can list Chelsea, Nottingham Forest, Wimbledon and Sheffield United amongst his former clubs - has been forced to drop down to the Combined Counties League, which is five tiers below the Football League.

But Shipperly says that reputation, or a career which was primarily played in England’s top two divisions, counts for very little when firing off job applications.

“I went for a couple of interviews over Christmas at Ryman Division One South clubs and got down to the last two applicants,” said Shipperley, who retired in 2007.

“It’s been frustrating. I would’ve thought that an ex-pro would’ve got into the non-league game quite easily but actually it is tough. I could name clubs who don’t even call you back and I had one who I phoned that said they had received my application but thought I would want too much money before putting the phone down on me - that’s the kind of people you are dealing with.

“I’m doing it for nothing at Bedfont. I just want to get into senior football and learn my managerial style. I think I know what I’ll be like but you’ve got to start somewhere and I’m looking forward to it.

“Even though it’s a lower league we are up against people with some unbelievable budgets and I’ve got a very small one - hence why I’m not getting paid, because my players won’t be. I’ve got to use my contacts and get people I think can do a job for me.”

One of Shipperley’s first transfer targets shouldn’t be too difficult to persuade to make the move to The Orchard - his brother James, who is a central defender at North Greenford United, who already play in the same division. His sibling will also be able to supply some information on the sides they will be facing come August.

“I won’t go any lower than this level to manage so I’ll either do this and enjoy it or it will turn out to not be as good as I thought it would be,” said

Shipperley, who twice helped Palace to promotion during two spells in SE25.

“There is always the options of going back up to pro level and working with the kids at a club but being my own manager is something I had to do. The first ambition has to be to get out of this division. It’s tough but that’s what I’m aiming for. I would like to manage in the Football League but I imagine you would have to be around the non- league scene for three or four years at the least. I’m ambitious but that doesn’t guarantee success.

“I’ve got to approach things a little differently because it is not a pro set-up. Lads will be doing a shift at work and then I’m asking them to train on a Tuesday and Thursday, so there has to be a bit more of a fun element.

“What I have learned over a 15-year career is good man-management is so important. You have to speak to people how you want to be spoken to by others.”

When Shipperley hung up his boots - his final career stats were 139 goals in 509 matches - he did nothing for the next year.

But he is eight months into learning The Knowledge, which would qualify him to become a licensed taxi driver in the capital.

“At first I did all the things I couldn’t do as a player - going out on a Friday night and taking a holiday at Christmas,” explained Shipperley. “But suddenly I got really bored.

“One of my mates owns a roofing firm so I do two or three days a week doing deliveries. It gets me out of the house because I began to feel like a retired 70-year-old who had nothing to get up for in the morning.

“I’m eight months into doing The Knowledge and if you study full-time it can be done in about two years but I’ll be a bit slower because I’ve got Bedfont to focus on. I won’t do the deliveries anymore and I’ll be treating the job like it was a couple of leagues higher by going out watching matches and doing things the right way.

“But being a black cab driver is a great trade. I’m very passionate about London and its history so it would be a job that suits me.”
